Resetting the time belt on a 94 Honda Civic?

Hi, so I just bought my very first car, and I know absolutely nothing about cars. Anyways, I took it to the smog shop the other day, since DMV, required it, and they said everything was fine except the timing. It was apparently off by quite a lot, and it needed to be set to its appropriate timing for it to pass the smog check. Now I want to know approximately how much does it cost to get this fixed, just so I have prior knowledge before i take it to the repair shop, since I would not like to get ripped off by greedy mechanics.

What state are you in? Smog checks can vary by state. As a side note, best to only buy a car that has valid smog check. That might be why the owner was selling it, couldn't pass the smog test.
Timing? That does not make sense to me. Is there a check engine light on? If so go to an part store to get a free check engine light test, write down the code and description.
If the timing was off the car would run rough. But I'm not sure how the smog station would tell that.
If the timing belt is slipping or worn that will be expensive, sorry not sure how much for 94 CIVIC.

They're talking ignition timing not cam timing and it'll cost about 50 to 75 dollars, take your failure sheet to the shop.
Here's a little write up that may help you understand, why someone advanced it… And that it may have a performance chip, then the cost goes up to return to stock
