Added (1). I never get an absolute answer on this question, but can you feel the VTEC kick in with a 2008 SOHC Automatic Civic LX? Just a simple yes or no would help a lot. I'll probably switch on over to buying an SI down the road.
No! I do not understand why youngsters with Honda vehicle think that VTEC is some kind of turbocharger or supercharger engine and it can be felt when "Something" kicks in: NO, NO and NO. Read this article about Honda I-VTEC, VTECH technologies:

It is faster then a non-vtec but as far as a big difference when it engages, not really. If you're really paying attention to it, as in watching your tach as you hit 4500 rpm you can feel and hear a slight difference.

I want to upgrade my hondas SOHC 1.6 ltr engine with new pistons, crankshaft, camshaft, displacement, engine head, valves and springs, cam gears, connecting rods, fuel system, and a small stage 1 turbo but the engine has 300,000 miles in it.
