Tips for buying my first car?
I started working part time yesterday. I'm a junior in high school (16 years old) but this time next year I will be attending a local community college and transportation is going to be a major issue. Not only that, but a car would be extremely beneficial to me and my family for many reasons. I would like to spend no more than $3000 on my first car and I'm not expecting too much out of it. I need some tips on how to go about buying one, some cars I can get for cheap (and affordable insurance) I have been thinking about a Honda Civic and a Chevy Cavalier.
With a $3k price ceiling you will be very limited. However, a decade or so old Honda Civic would be a very safe choice. There are a ton on the road, and they are very reliable and safe. Others to consider would the the Ford Focus or Mazda 3. The reliability of the Cavalier is less than desirable.
Don't even think of getting a Cavalier in that price range.
Buy a cosmetically flawed Honda or Toyota. It will most likely cost half as much to maintain and last twice as long.
Look at how many Cavaliers are still on the road compared to Hondas/Toyotas, they were poorly built/designed and we're more or less disposable, several of my frI ends have had them over the years, all left them stranded and had to be scrapped after repairs got way too expensive.
A Honda or a Subaru would be a safe reliable bet. You could also get a Ford focus or escort too
Toyota Corolla
Honda Civic
Mazda 3
Toyota Camry
Honda Accord

Drive, second, and low. I know low is the highest gear because it increases rpm much faster than drive. My question is, when am I supposed to use something other than drive? Any tricks or hints? When I merge onto the freeway, do I go in second gear, accelerate the. Drop down to drive? Please any tricks will be greatly appreciated
