Will my keys get locked in my car?

Tonight when I leave work, I wanna start my car ahead of time for the first time. I've never done it before since I'm afraid my doors will lock and my keys will be inside. I have a 2007 Honda Civic coupe. If I start my car to let it warm up, I then shut the door, and go inside for about ten mins, will my door stay unlocked? Or will my keys get locked inside?

Roll down your window before you go inside. The engine will still warm up, and you can't get locked out. When you get into the car, close the window, and the heater will easily heat the air inside the car.

If your ignition key is not the same key as your door key you could take the door key with you.

On the other hand, it is not usually a good idea to leave a car running to warm up for more than one or two minutes. If you want to be toasty warm yourself, wear heavier clothing. Wear a hat. Knit a sweater.

Actually, it's quite possible that your car could be stolen if you leave it running with the doors unlocked. Either invest in a remote starter that can start and warm your car without a key or unlocking the doors, OR carry a second ignition key so you can start the car and then lock the doors with your spare key.

Your keys won't get locked inside. If you unlock your car and don't open a door or start the engine, it locks itself after a few minutes as a security feature (it assumes you accidentally unlocked it). But if you've gone into the car and started the engine it will not lock. I have my staff start up some cars (all Honda) on our lot on cold mornings, and leave them running for ten or twenty minutes. They definitely don't lock. The only thing you need to worry about is it being stolen - but if you have a good view of it this should not be an issue.

In many states, it is ILLEGAL to leave the car unattended with the keys inside. The reason is that it makes it easy to steal the car. A car thief won't care about breaking a window to get in.
There are 2 ways to do what you want.
1. Keep a spare set of keys with you.
2. Get a remote starter.

You'll be fine. I'm always paranoid when I do it but just make sure you unlock the whole car before starting.

TRY IT WITH THE WIDOW OPEN FIRST, START THE CAR GET OUT CLOSE THE DOOR WITH THE WINDOW OPEN, IS THE CAR SELF LOCK, YOUR WINDOW IS OPEN, IF IT DOES NOT LOCK ITSELF THEN CLOSE THE WINDOW

If I saw it, I would take it for a joy ride.

I do this all the time in the cold winter. It's 10°F here now. I have a set of keys which includes my vehicle, house, padlock on gate, garage, toolbox, etc.

I also have a spare door/ignition key that I keep in my pocket. I use that key to start my vehicle, leaving the heater on hot and the fan on low. I lock the door and go back inside for 10 minutes. I don't worry about thieves. I go back out, unlock the door, get in and drive away. How much does a single key cost, TWO DOLLARS?!

As soon as you go back inside, zoom, your car will be gone with a happy thief enjoying your music
