If you're Really lucky, your rocker switch has a burnt, or dirty, contact. Maybe contact cleaner, or an Emory board/sandpaper. More likely you'll need a new switch. Once you have access to the leads, I would bypass the switch first, to make sure the motor WORKS in both directions. No sense in tearing up the switch, if the problem is elsewhere. If you've ever had to break into the car with a hanger or slimjim, there's may be a wire off. Be very careful taking the door panel off, and you'll be able to put it back to look just like before you took it off.

The only other thing I know to do is to replace the motor, but check the switch and wiring, first. The new motor is not cheap, and will work no better than the old one if that's not the problem.

I had the same problem before. It was the cable that pulls the windows up and down that broke loose, The fastest way to fix this is to replace the whole power window regulator, That is a one singe unit that comes with the new motor, track, and cable / spool. Unfortunately you can't replace just a single part, it is only sold as a whole unit.

If you are handy, you may be able to re-attach the cable depending on how it came loose, my cable was intact, it was the plastic part that was holding it that broke, so I just used some JB Weld epoxy to re-attach it, but it was not easy since the cable has to go wind inside a spool which is spring loaded. It took me hours to wind up the cable in the spool but it worked. Save me a hundred dollars.

I tried the same method on another instance but the JB-Weld epoxy did not hold, so I used small bolt and nut to hold the cable in place. The cable itself was broken also so, I replaced it with some bicycle brake cables which is almost exactly the same.

  • Passenger side window won't go up after radio stolen? Recently my car was stolen about a week later we found the car and the only thing really missing was the radio which had been stolen. The window of the passenger side was also all the way down. Now, it won't go back up. Any ideas what could happened or how to fix it? I'm thinking it had something to do with the stolen radio and maybe a cable or something getting disconnected? The car is a 1996 Honda Civic with power windows. Checked the fuses and they are good.
