1984 Honda Shadow 700 won't start?
Bike only starts and works great when jumped from a running vehicle. Otherwise, the battery gets drained by pressing the start button a few times (because the starTER takes all the energy trying to crank the engine). I have replaced a regulator/rectifier, staTOR, cleaned the spark plugs, added gas to the tank. Still no luck.
What in the world could be the problem? Remember, it starts right up when jumped for the car and you can drive it around for as long as you want. But, once you shut off the engine, it won't start. Seems like the battery still does not get charged. WHY?
Hook up a multi / volt meter to the battery when the bike is running, it should be reading between 13.5V - 14.5V when throttle is held at @ 5000RPM's. A volt-meter is the only way you can find out if your battery is charging or not.
Also, check the battery connections are all clean and shiny, use sandpaper. Make sure they're tight to. The cables that run onto the battery, make sure they're thick and twisted good at the ends, not frayed and thin. Might also be a good idea to check the earth running from battery, find where it grounds onto frame / engine, and clean it up and the surface under it.
Jason also makes a good point about the starter. It's possible that a starter could go bad and draw to much amps from the battery, thus draining it quick.
The battery is done.
The F-ing BATTERY is dead.
Has it occurred to you that the battery is the problem.
Dead battery.
The battery has no strength to spin the starter motor.
Replace it.
The bike's charging system helps to sustain the battery while the engine is running.
It's like trying to start your bike with a flashlight battery.
If it is in a fact a new battery, and it starts up and runs fine but always needs a jump, then you most likely need a new starter. When a starter begins to go bad it will use up all of your batteries charge to get the vehicle going. Have seen this a lot of times. Usually when it happens the battery is good for two or three starts and then its dead. Most people will think its the charging system or the battery and after replacing components it still happens. Get a new starter and I BET it stops happening.
Get it running then take the cable off the battery if it stalls out change the alternator hope this helps Phil

Is this a problem i will have to address with the bike or is this just a beginner mistake? The engine runs great, I want to keep it that way
- Should I buy a Honda cb900 custom for 700 bucks? This motorcycle has 44,000 miles. About how much money would I be able to sell it for? Looks average taken care of.
- My 1983 Honda nighthawk 650 won't start with the electric start? I recently replaced the ignition coils because the old ones were getting heat soaked and the bike would die, however now the bike won't start with the electric start it turns over fin and the starter sounds fine but it won't start occasionally it ll start when it's cold or try to but I've been having to bump start it in order to ride it. So what's making it do this? Could it be the kill switch? Or something else?
