6v coil in 12 volt system?
The question is a little backwards, just got a 1974 honda xl250 with no spark. The bike doesn't need a battery to run. All i have is a 12v battery, the bike is 6v system. I can unhook everything else, and apply the battery straight to the hot wire and ground it on the engine, so the the 12v is only going through the points system and the coil, i want to do this and manualy touch the points together to see if i have spark, to test the coil, will this hurt anything? I understand it will be putting 4x the voltage through the spark plug, but will it be ok? Also the coil pack has some kind of capacitor thing attached to it, will it hurt that?
Probably should have said that, 6v battery is on the way, battery store said it will be here tomorrow, were planning a riding trip saturday morning so i wanna make sure the bike is running tonight and not have to worry about fixing woth only a few hours to spare. But still the battery only runs the lights and stuff, bike should run fine without battery
You'll probably fry something. Get a 6V battery.
Yeah the 'lights and stuff'.
Wait for the 6V battery, your 'lights and stuff' will not work for very long with a 12V and you will fry components.
- I have a 1994 honda vt1100 motorcycle possible coil problems? I was riding to work and it started sputtering. I stoped, and after a few minutes it did restart but ran very poor. Started it again and could take off both back sparkplug wires and it still ran poor. I could take off 1 of the 2 front wires and it died? I checked the resistance on both the high and low. The high was about 3.4 and i couldnt get anything from the low? So please any help would be appreciated.
