Get away without a car in Denver?

I currently am a full time DU student who has had a car since I was 16. I just returned from study abroad and am needing to deal with my honda's blown head gasket from December. This Honda is my 3rd car since I've been 16 and I don't think I can handle another headache from craigslist. All three of my cars have been in and out of repair shops and then just broke down. I also just got my first apartment and have those bills so I won't be able to afford a car payment. I was considering getting a moped or simply a bike but I'm not sure how effective that would be. I'm working on getting a job downtown or returning to my old job near campus. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Buy a Japanese car with a full service history. Don't touch any car that does not have full details AND is still in warranty.

I didn't have - or need - a vehicle the three years I lived in Denver. I lived on 6th Avenue and Pearl Street, and simply rode my bike on the greenbelt north to downtown or south to Cherry Creek. Everything I needed was within walking distance. If I went out clubbing, I sometimes took a taxi.
