Maybe the rectifier shorted?

That's nice. Did you want to ask a question while you're here?

Like dude, when wires melt there's a reason. A recent edition of MCN mentions that due to the primitive voltage regulation (whereby one or more of the stator phases is shorted to ground by the regulator) of most motorcycles, their regulator-rectifiers tend to DIE every few years. The better design is to have a rotor coil instead of a permanent magnet, and regulate the exciter current to the rotor coil like the Bosch alternators used on European bikes do. Bet your regulator / rectifier just died. You also can try ohming out the stator coils. They should be a few ohms apiece, and not wildly different. Look at and sniff for charred stator windings. You don't tell us if there are auxiliary lights and other farkels on the bike. It's pretty easy to overload the electrical system on a motorcycle. Take 'em off. Look for worn insulation / shorts in the harness. It's amazing what you can just see. Butcha gotta look.

Honda reg/recs are renowned for going pop. Replace it either with OE or one with the same spec from almost any reputable auto-electrical supplier.
