How long should you keep a beginner bike before upgrading?

On a Honda CB300F, financed it with a 4 year loan, might double the payments to get it to 2. How long should i stick With a 300 before going to say a 600

Always keep it, sell to another beginner.

I'd recommend at least 10,000 miles.

The Honda CB300F is a middleweight motorcycle, good for any road, coast to coast.
It is not a "beginner" bike. You can upsize, but you can't upgrade.

It was nearly 20 years on motorcycles before I got a middleweight. And 20 years later before I got a 650.
I have never financed a motorcycle. Cash only.

Until you can pass newbies on the twisties who think a 600 is a good learners bike.

I started with a Honda Rebel 250 (CMX-250) which was great for around town. It was nimble and got great mileage. When I took it for a ride up to the mountains 60 miles away (120 miles round trip) it beat me to death, and I traded it the next week for a Suzuki Savage LS-650. It was a torquey light single cylinder 650cc, but only had a 4 speed transmission, and I kept hunting for fifth gear at highway speeds. I finally traded it for my current bike, a Suzuki S-50 Boulevard (805cc) with a V-twin and shaft drive. I think I had the Rebel for three years, the Savage for 11 years, and have had the Boulevard for 6 years. Only you will know when you want to upgrade to a bigger bike and what your riding needs are, although many people are just fine sticking with a mid-range bike.

You will miss your beginners bike. Your first bike ever, trust me! Pass it to somebody you know will take care of it. Your bike is not a beginners bike. It's a great bike to keep.

Keep it until you've become better than the bike and need more power. If top speed still awes you, you aren't ready for a more powerful machine.

Up to you. IMHO, when you put 24,000 mikes on her in 2 years, have ridden in in Every possible scenario ( rain, heat, traffic, hi speed, blowouts, avoiding bovines on unfenced land) and feel confident or itch for more power, go for it.

I kinda Wish I had a 300 just for shopping, going to class. Tires cheaper and last longer. Shame to use my Harley to get eggs…

My starter bike was an 800, kept it 6 months, then traded it on a new 1600cc bike. Your mileage may vary.

When I started riding it was recommended at 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever came last. The purpose was to build enough experience to be safe on the roads, to be able to handle a bigger bike, and to know just what type of riding you preferred so you could choose the correct bike.

Saw a lot of people keep their beginner bike as it served their needs and they liked it. Others couldn't wait to move along. My 'beginner' was a 750cc Honda Nighthawk bought used. I kept it 7 months and 6,000 miles, commuted to work, took it on long day rides, and rode part of my vacation from Arizona to Seattle and back. Sold it when it needed servicing and a new chain and sprockets for an 1100cc cruiser, which I would not have known I wanted when I first started riding.

  • Upgrading 300,000 miles SOHC engine? I want to upgrade my hondas SOHC 1.6 ltr engine with new pistons, crankshaft, camshaft, displacement, engine head, valves and springs, cam gears, connecting rods, fuel system, and a small stage 1 turbo but the engine has 300,000 miles in it. If i upgrade it anyway, will it make the engine newer, or will i have to replace it either way?
  • Upgrading exhaust on Honda? I have an 07 honda pilot with the 3.5l v6. Everything is stock I would like to know what muffler I should get to achieve a deeper more rumble sound ( more like a truck). Please don't say get a v8 or it won't sound like a truck because I know it won't but I want the deepest sound I can get out of a v6 thanks so much
