Should I buy a 2006 Suzuki Hayabusa?
I'm 20 years old and currently looking to purchase a sport bike. I have rode dirt bikes my entire life but have never owned a motorcycle. I have been looking at some in the 600cc class. My friend has a Honda 600cbr and I ride it very often. The bank that I work at just received a 2006 Hayabusa with around 12000 miles. The bike is missing a muffler and has also been stretched what I believe to be about 2-4 inches. The bike is also in need of a paint job. It is painted flat black and not well done. I have a chance to buy the bike for around 4500 and just want to know if this sounds like a good deal. I will be putting a muffler of some kind on it as well as the stock swing arm. Please help.
Added (1). I should have mentioned that the bike is selling for 5500. Because I work at the bank I was told that I could buy it for 4500 at the moment or wait until winter and possibly get it even cheaper. I just want to know if it would be worth the risk or if I should continue looking.
Dirt bikes mean nothing - my 12 year old rides a TTR 125. Doesn't mean he has any skill or road experience to ride a 'busa. A 600cc bike has an engine that's less than half the size of a 'busa.
If you really don't care about stuff like that, fine. It sounds like this bike has had some cut-rate, home-brew work done to it. I'd be very careful about buying - all the info you have is mileage (means little) and stuff that isn't correct for the bike. Get a licensed mechanic that YOU choose to inspect it. If it's in good shape with that mileage, be aware that the price is too low.
This isn't a sports bike but a high speed tourer. If you've never owned a bike before it's a completely inappropriate choice. Dangerous in the extreme.
I'd stay away from it for the following reasons: 'Busa's are high revving, high performance bikes. They need their oil changed quite often and with fairly high dollar full synthetic performance/racing oil. It holds just short of 4 quarts. If someone is too cheap to give their bike a quality paint job, do you really think they're going to take the time and money to take care of it's internals? I doubt it. An extended swing arm indicates the previous owner was pretty hard on the throttle. Not keeping good oil in it will also cause additional wear on the clutch plates. Hard to know what condition they're in until they go. Condition of chain and sprockets would e worth checking also. 12000 miles isn't an exceptional amount of miles for a bike, but it's a lot of miles on an original chain and sprockets, especially if ridden hard. Again, think the original owner took the time to keep it oiled and lubed?
'Busa's are great bikes. A real hoot to ride. The 06 was the fastest production bike made. I'm not going to lecture you on needed experience to ride one and all like that, but I will say that bikes like the Busa, GSXR and other high performance bikes really magnify any type of riding mistakes you might make. If you're not on top of your game, they're just not that much fun to ride, and if you pick one up with a sketchy mechanical history, the odds are good you could end up with little more than a $4500 paper weight. Parts and labor are high dollar for those bikes. Me… I'd keep looking. My.02 anyway.
A motorbike is only as fast as your right wrist allows.
However, this particular Hayabusa sounds as though it's been messed about with and probably not done correctly.
They are exceptionally fast bikes. Sure, in the out and out power stakes modern 1000cc sports bikes have overtaken it, but its not all about peak power. The Hayabusa is 1300cc and so it's peak power will come in lower down the revs than say a BMW S1000RR - meaning that low down and midrange, the Hayabusa will produce more power and so will be more of a handful/faster than the BMW S1000RR. This isn't very confidence inspiring to a newbiew. You say you've ridden dirt bikes - how do they compare to a 190bhp super bike?
Just as a side note, have you done an insurance quote on a Hayabusa? You may find that due to age/experience that is a ridiculously high price and may answer your question of whether you should buy it.

A money pit that some unknown tuner has "improved" the handling by stretching it, probably dropped it and disguised the fact with matt black paint. And that price seems a bit high to me for a bike in that condition.
- TVS Wego or Honda Activa or Suzuki Access? I want to buy a scooter for me and my wife use. Which one is best in terms of comfort, suspension and mileage… And less maintenance cost…
- Will honda and yamaha ever make a motorcycle to compete with the Hayabusa and ZX-14R? The most powerful Yamaha/Honda motorcycles are the Yamaha R1 and the Cbr-1000rr. Will they ever make a bike 1300 - 1400 cc bike to compete with the Suzuki Hayabusa (1300cc) or the Zx14 (1400cc)?
- Should I trade my Honda Crf230f for a Suzuki Rmz250? I have a 2006 crf230f with an fmf powercore 4 slip on and also re jetted and a Uni high flow airfilter an amr stage 3 rev box and a younger kid is offering to trade me his 2004 rmz250 because it is too big for him. Any opinions?
- Should I get an Suzuki SV650 or a Honda CBR600 f4i? I'm a beginner rider and I was wondering which of these would best fit me for my first ride. I know one is a cruiser and one is a crotch rocket? So how much difference is there between the two? I'm 5'6 by the way if that affects anything.
