Sport bike maintenance for beginners?
I have a 2004 honda cbr 600 f4i and I want to be able to keep it running and not have to worry. What are some things I need to know for keeping the bike well maintained? By that I mean when should I check oil, tire pressure, etc. And when do I need to change the chain and all that kinda stuff. And is there just any general tips I could use?
First thing you need to do is buy a service/repair manual for your bike. It will have a suggested maintenance schedule PLUS detailed instructions (with pictures) for most procedures and repairs. You should be able to find the proper manual at your local Honda motorcycle dealer.
JetDoc has a good point, a Shop Manual. But your general information about general maintenance is a learned thing not found in that Shop Manual unless you know where to look and what you're looking at.
Now regardless of my opinion that you have bought the wrong bike for a beginner, here's a few tips anyways.
Inspect your bike daily (before you ride).
Lube the chain every 200 miles, more if you ride in the rain.
Change out the engine oil every 3,000 miles, every other time with a fresh filter.
Tire pressure is sorta of a marginal zone but your bike should be 32psi front and 34psi rear.
As you ride feel/hear for things that change as you ride, you can feel/hear an unlubed chain, after you change the oil a few times you'll feel that the oil needs changing without even looking at the odo or your write-down sheet.
- Which bike would be a good first sport bike. Looking at CBR1000/600's and also the yamaha R1/R6? I don't know much about the differences, I know some people are all for Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, of Kawasaki. Seems that whatever bike someone has, they say its the best. I wish I could just ride all of them and see for myself. Tampa, FL Sam
- What should I get for my first sport bike? I have been riding an old 1975 175xl Honda enduro for about a year now so I wouldn't consider myself a beginner but I I've been hearing that the 250 ninja is a great beginner bike and this will be my first Sport bike so this is the bike I have been looking at. Is this a good idea or will I go out grow it too fast? I'm about 135 pounds and 5'4 My price range is under 3000$ I'm open to any advice
- Is a Honda Shadow VLX Deluxe a good beginners bike? Looking at a 2005 Shadow VLX Deluxe 600cc for my first bike. I'm 6' 1'' 190lbs. Just don't want to go too small and have to upgrade to soon, but don't want to die either. Don't need anything with crazy power or speed, just getting around town and some cruising.
- Is a Honda cbr600 a good beginners bike? I'm 13 years old, and i'm saving up for one. I rode my brothers pit bike on the highest gear possible, while going very fast and going through slippery sand. I was comfortable on it. I feel that a 250cc or a 300cc motorbike is too small. I like the looks and how fast the cbr600rr goes. What do you think of it?
