What tools do I need to remove the motor to my Honda Shadow Spirit?
I have an old 2004 Honda Shadow Spirit with a blown motor. I want to try to take it apart and remove the engine. If I buy tool kit for the Honda Shadow will that come with all the tools I need, or are those tool kits more just for basic stuff. Just wondering if I need to buy a full socket set. And also if the bolts are metric sizes or standard?
It is a HONDA every thing is Meteric and a tool kit from a bike will not be enough to fix a blown motor
First tool is a manual- Haynes usually features a pull engine and rebuild, gives list of tools needed. Full socket set, 3/8 drive with a second set of deep wells if base set doesn't have them. Harbor Freight/Pittsburg brand or Buffalo Brand from some of big box stores is reasonable price- $30.00 and will do most of what is needed- couple of wobble extensions and swivel couplings handy. Set of box/open end wrenches from 8mm to 19 mm will be handy. 2 more months of winter in snow belt- good project to do just to learn. Cabin fever projects can be 'interesting'- Belleville UFO days has parade of fun things.
The tool kit for the bike is for the simple stuff. Like changing a sparkplug or removing an exhaust pipe or removing a wheel.
Removing the motor may require more tools and it is all metric. You almost got all the tools in the tool bag., however taking the motor apart
"You might need the odd wrench or screwdriver that is better than the one they give to you.
Asian are always 6 point socket sets… And maybe Allen keys? I don't know for Honda.
My Kaw had a full tool kit. If you need to buy you need to buy. I go to a cheap store to buy what i need when I need it. You will need an inch/pound torque wrench.
First thing I did when I decided to disassemble the back half of my bike was to buy 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch drive metric socket sets and 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive torque wrenches. Two sets of metric box / open wrenches come in handy because bolts often have two ends. A propane torch helps with the big stuck stuff.
Don't even think of using the basic tool kit that comes with the bike for anything other than the most minor repairs (Except for rear wheel nut & spark plug socket).
Buy a manual (Haymes or Clymer) for your bike & read it. Then a decent set of 3/8" drive sockets, a torque wrench with appropriate range, set of metric Allen keys, set of combination metric spanners 6,7,8,10,11,12,13,15,17,19,21mm
Decent set of screwdrivers & If an older bike with lots of Philip heads, an impact wrench & hammer.
You can re -use sound old gaskets by using Permatex No3 or similar non setting aviation gasket cement. DON't use silicone, lumps break off inside & clog oil galleries.l
You will also need a torque wrench to fit the new one - not cheap but maybe you can borrow one.
Metric set from 5mm to 24mm, screwdrivers, chain breaker, open end wrench set. 5mm to 22mm.
You really only need one tool. A hammer.
Nothing is "standard" in this world. My Moms '78 El Camino was a Mixture. If you mean an SAE set, forget it. Hondas are Metric, even most new cars. Only Harleys are SAE and even then, I've found a couple screws where only Metric sockets fit.
you Need: Metric 1/4" sockets 7-12 mm; 3/8" 7-18 mm.
1/4"and 3/8" ratchet drives.
Extensions, both 1/4" and 3/8". Universals for both.
18mm spark plug socket.
Feeler and wire gauges.
Scraper.
Wire brush
Pick for O-rings
Box wrenches; 7mm to 18 mm.
#2 Phillips plus common point.
Maybe a stubby Phillips and common point and two real long ones.
Pliers
Torque wrench to 60 ft/lbs.
Maybe torx sockets.
Allen wrenches, metric.
chainfall. Or Come along to roof beam to pull motor, solo. Nylon straps ( $10 at WalMart)
Maybe a n impact driver.
Liquid wrench.
Haynes book.
Rubber gloves,
Vaseline to seat O rings/seal gaskets.
Good light. Plenty of space, baggies and Magic marker, some cardboard boxes.
Patient girl friend.
- What is the max speed in each gear for a 2009 Honda Shadow Spirit 750? I can't find any details, even from Honda, what the maximum speed in MPH is for each of the 5 gear ratios on my 750 Shadow. Also, what is the engine redline? No factory tach and no details on what the engine is capable of turning.
- Is this 2004 Honda Shadow Spirit a good deal? So this is my first bike purchase and I want some opinions before I go for it. The bike I'm interested in has been dropped on both sides, needs front brakes, a rear tire, oil change, and turn signals. It is going for $2000 and has 23K miles on it. It also has a Cobra exhaust system that the owner says is worth $450. http://ventura.craigslist.org/mcy/4577908483.html How much would I be looking at for repairs as well?
- How much is a Honda Shadow Spirit 2003 worth? As in the title. How much is it work? For now I know that It has less then 100 miles. He never used it.
- Honda shadow spirit 750 or Honda rebel 250? I'm a beginner in bikes and never been on a bike on high way and I'm taking my courses now and thinking what will be the best bike for beginners will it be the Honda rebel 250 or honda shadow 750 spirit. Bare in mind I used to ride a scooter 150cc for fun. I really need your advise because honestly I'm lost here
