Are Trucks and SUV's and MiniVans good daily driving cars?

I mean its great to have them but i NEVer really understood why people drive them since they are gas hogs.

Like my supervisor drives a 2017 Sierra Elevation and he says he goes camping/hunting in the fall time so the storage on the Sierra is helpful, but he is a supervisor at a meat factory not sure if he carries any equipement for him at work.

My neighbor is an elementary school teacher and she drives a 2019 Honda Odyssey. She has 3 kids which makes sense, but they all take the school bus to and from school. I mean probably going to Church or something of course it is helpful for the minivan, but going to work 5 days a week in a minivan isn't that too much on gas?

Like they all tell me its cheaper for us to have 1 large car than 1 large car and 1 sedan to use when we don't need to have a big car.

I have 1 friend who has 2 kids and has a Rav 4. The Rav 4 saves a lot of gas apparently even if he is the only driver in it.

Added (1). Cause sometimes I'm like damn so if you want to go to the store you'd have to drive your truck all the way there and then come back? I mean did you really need the truck just to get that 1 item at the store?

Most of us can't afford to own 2 cars. I'm sure the woman with 3 kids does a lot more than going to church. She has to take those kids to various things, and go to the store, and drive them around on weekends. The Odyssey gets pretty good mileage, by the way. But I know people who have gone from the mini-vans to the models like the Pilot that have 3 rows of seats, so you can accommodate more than 2 children, and those get better mileage than the mini-vans. It's the logistics-you can't put kids in the front seat, and young ones each have to be in a car seat, so you can't really get more than 2 in the back seat. Anyone who has more than 2 children really has to have something bigger than a small sedan.

Not really, although it depends upon your needs. I have a Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. It has enough hauling space for road trips and stocking up at Costco, so it works for me. My brother-in-law works rebuilding old transmissions, and my niece works for him. She drives long rural routes to various auto shops and buys up old transmissions and hauls them back to their shop. This means she's on the road in bad weather, sometimes on rough rural roads, and sometimes with substantial loads. She drives a pickup for work because it makes more sense than something smaller.

There are some people who like vehicles that are impractical for the street or their normal everyday use. I can't speak for them. There's a doctor near where I live who has a brand new Ford Raptor with larger-than-stock oversized wheel and mud terrain tires, but since purchase the truck has only been on pavement. It's never been on gravel, let alone mud. Another, an anesthesiologist, purchased a 707 Horsepower Hellcat as his daily driver. He totaled the car in a street race and will now spend the rest of his life in a nursing home. At the time of the accident he was not yet 30 years old.

Having said that, as long as someone doesn't do anything unlawful, America is supposed to be a land of freedom where the government has the burden of proving why we should not be permitted to own something, as opposed to us having to prove why we should be allowed to own something. Guy with the Ford Raptor doesn't have to justify why he needs 35" tires. All the reason he needs is, " 'cause I want it"

So, back to your original question, are Trucks, SUVs, and Minivans good daily drivers? The answer is no, but to some, the fuel economy is a low priority when car shopping.

I drive a large SUV. It has power, is very comfortable, has ample cargo space, can tow several thousand pounds and has 4wd. I really couldn't care less that it gets worse gas mileage than a Honda Fit.

  • Which trucks are the most reliable or easiest to fix if something goes wrong? I'm searching for a pick up truck thats reliable. I know everyone has their preference. I'm searching between a ranger s10 z71 f150 and gmc mid sized trucks. Any other suggestions would be great. I know some cars like honda are very easy to fix and i'm just wanting a truck that I can easily fix if something goes wrong.
  • What are the top 5 or so used cars/trucks under $3000 in a CA market? Another words, what are the easiest or most sought after i.e. Camry and Honda are probably two of them, can you name others? Would appreciate if your responses is backed up with experience, i.e. Someone in the business, salesman etc. Or actual knowledge first hand. Nobody is reading the question and answering it…
  • Which of these minivans is best? My parents want to buy a new minivan for our family of 5, and we're debating between these four - Honda Odyssey - Kia Sedona - Nissan Quest - Toyota Sienna Which would you buy? (the 2016)
  • Is the Type R a good daily driver? My Honda dealer was offering a new 2019 Type R for about $36 000. He says if you drive it economically it can save gas, but there's also a sport/type r mode if you want to have fun. He says it has a 4 cylinder turbo engine. then my Nissan dealer was saying how I should get a Maxima instead. It is roomy, luxurious with a CVT, V6 producing 300 horsepower. It does use a little more gas than the Type R.
