Should I replace the transmission in my 01 honda odyssey?

Should I replace and purchase a warranty if I can and then keep the van at least another year and sell it. Or should I get something else is have to make payments on? I currently own the odyssey.

I like turtles

You'll sometimes hear people say, "Just get a new van, the repairs are worth more than the van itself." While that may be true, the reasoning is flawed.

The question you should be asking is, are the repairs more expensive than the replacement vehicle, if you decided to go that route?

The answer is almost always that it is cheaper to repair the vehicle you have.

The other thing is that the warranty you purchase is a lot like a car payment, with the added caveat that nothing else might go wrong with your Odyssey and there went all that money for nothing.

I recommend getting the repairs done, and then set up an automatic deposit from your paycheck. Nothing huge, but nothing insubstantial, either. If you can do it, call it about $20-50 per paycheck. If you're paid every other week, at the end of the year that's up to $1000+ socked away in a savings account specifically for car repairs. Don't dip into it for little things like light bulbs or oil changes, but for new tires, yes. Alignments and brakes, yes. Anything you might have tried to use that warranty for, that's what the savings is for.

And a few years down the road when you've finally worn the Odyssey completely down to a nub, that savings account will be even bigger and can be a nice, juicy down payment on a replacement vehicle - maybe something nicer or newer than you could have otherwise afforded. And when you go to apply for a loan for your car, the bank will note your thrifty, conservative habits and be more willing to go out on a limb for you.

That's my take on it. Using methods not too different from this I've saved about $20,000 over two years to get new siding and windows on my house. Just a couple more thousand to go and I'm there. You can do it, too.

HI replacing anything on old cars is a waste of time. Time to buy a newer car.

That's your decision to make. It depends on if you need brakes, tires, and other repairs too.

  • What's the value of a honda odyssey with a failed transmission? I paid $3750 FOR A HONDA ODYSSEY, WHAT WILL IT BE WORTH WITH A FAILED TRANSMISSION? VAN IS IN GOOD CONDITION WITH All THE SAME TIRES, CLEAN INSIDE AND NO DENTS.
  • Repair vs replace Honda Odyssey? Needs about $800 in axle repairs, will need timing belt soon when it hits 90K, otherwise in good condition. Gets about 17 mpg in city. Dealer offered 13K trade in against Avalon Hybrid. Repair vs replace? depreciation if kept another 2 yrs?
  • How much should I pay to replace the AC compressor on a 2010 Honda Odyssey? The air conditioning on my wife's minivan recently went out. I had her take it to a mechanic expecting a refill situations costing less than $100. When they got back to us they said the clutch would not engage on the AC and it required replacement costing over 1100 dollars. I've seen the part online for $250 to 450. How much is reasonable to pay for this repair? Would I be better off buying the part online and having someone else install it? I'm told the job is about 3 hours.
  • 1999 Honda Odyssey Transmission? I have a 1999 Honda odyssey that I bought in April 2014 with 118K miles and by December 2014 my transmission was gone. I now don't know if I should have my transmission rebuilt for $1,300 with a 1 year warranty… OR as my husband wants to do go the cheaper way which is to buy one from a savage and install it… Any suggestions, comments?
