1997 honda accord broken timing belt or timing is off?

Was driving home from work on the interstate. Was approaching traffic so i hit the clutch to downshift. When i hit the gas nothing happened. When i looked at the dashboard everything was lit. I pull over and start the car back up. I drive another half a mile and when i press the clutch, i heard a slight clunk and it died again. When i tried to start it, it sounded like a drill running. I seen online thats no compression which is a sign that the belt is broken. But my car started back up again. So is the belt broken or is the timing horribly off? The engine is a f22b2.

If the belt broke it wouldn't run. The timing may have jumped. You can take the upper cover off and look at the belt and check the valve timing. Turn the crank to TDC and see if the cam lines up with the notch or arrow.

If the timing belt is broken, the car will not run. If the timing is off, the car will run very rough and likely stall if it idles at all.

Check for spark, the car likely has a failing ignition module or a worn distributor shaft. And since this is a 90s Honda, check the main relay.

If the motor starts you haven't bent any valves bad enough to lock the motor up… Yet. You need to take the timing belt cover off and put the motor on #1 TDC to check the timing marks. The belt could have jumped a tooth or two but there are other reasons for a motor to stall so have a mechanic check it out. The feeling that the motor wasn't cranking with compression may also just have been the starter not engaging in the flywheel and the starter motor was just free spinning.

These cars had a few common problems and if you want to continue to own it and drive it reliably you should just make a preemptive strike and replace the following things right now:
- The timing and balance shaft belts with a new water pump.
- A complete new distributor.
- A new ignition switch - common failure, recall on some.
- A new PGMFI (main relay)

All of these can be done for less than$500. If you do it all yourself and there's online instructions if you search for it.
