Try this: Step on the brake pedal & see IF the brake lights work. There's a safety interlock between the brakes & the transmission shifter to make sure you have the brakes on when you shift out of park. If the brakes lights don't work, then the brake light switch up under the drivers dash is broken. Not expensive or hard to replace.

Even when I have it "shifted" to park, I can't start the car. I can only start it in Neutral. When it is in the park position, the park light doesn't come on, and I can easily shift it down to reverse or neutral without having to press and hold the button. What could be wrong?
