Ideas, could they help race using an automatic transmission?
I've been interested in racing lately. Although it is not part of my question, bonus points if you briefly explain the different types!
First off, this is purely for curiosity(for now, no life long promises!).
I've read a lot saying manual transmissions are more efficient for racing because you can hold the gears longer, into the redline rpm's, and that automatic transmissions will shift gears before redline point. For this reason, manual transmissions will get a faster acceleration if used properly.
My question however: Is it possible to achieve the same rpm's with an automatic? I don't mean a sports car, I mean like a typical Honda or Nissan. My theory to achieve this would be to start the race in 1 instead of D, then after getting into 6000 rpms shift into second gear, etc. Essentially manually shifting up the gears. Would this work?
I have not and do not intend to test this as it will most likely wreck my transmission I just rebuilt.
Any and all positive contribution is welcome
Your a little off. The idea of when to shift is not the "red line" you've gone past your high torque point by then and therefore you will be the looser every time.
Yes, it IS possible to manually shift an automatic transmission. Automatic transmissions are much more efficient these days than they were, like 30 years ago. Lots of modern "sporty" cars have paddle shifters that allow the driver to shift an automatic trans up or down from the steering wheel.
The BIG problem with automatic transmissions in pure racing cars is the weight and the heat an automatic trans produces. Manual transmissions weigh less, when weight can be a critical design factor, and automatic transmissions need a separate radiator or oil cooler to keep the temperatures down.
- Help on automatic transmission, tips and tricks from any car experts? Hello I'm new to driving and was hoping if someone could give me insight. My honda is automatic and has 3 gears. Drive, second, and low. I know low is the highest gear because it increases rpm much faster than drive. My question is, when am I supposed to use something other than drive? Any tricks or hints? When I merge onto the freeway, do I go in second gear, accelerate the. Drop down to drive? Please any tricks will be greatly appreciated
- What is a fast cheap automatic car to drag race with & modify? I don't got the car yet, It would be my first car but I want to know what I should I get that would be cheap to modify and run fast to drag, I know that Honda Civics that are year 2000 and lower are cheap to modify but most of them are Stick Shift. It wouldn't be drag racing on the track it would be illegal, & Year 2005 & lower.
- Do people realize how much pain they inflict when they scratch the hell out of a car in a parking lot? I worked my *** off to pay for my car. Today, coming out of work. I noticed someone dinged and made a huge scratch to the metal almost on my Honda Civic Si. What's worse is my car is black, so it's very noticeable. That person doesn't know how hard I worked to buy my car. I love it to death. And they had the audacity to not even leave a note! I hate Houston and the animals that live here.
- Any ideas on what could be wrong with my car? - 1 I own a 2008 Honda Civic. When I returned home after driving around for a while I turned my car off but once outside of the car it sounded as though it was still running. I tried turning my car on and turning it back off, but the sound continued. I left it thinking it would be okay. The next night I tried turning my car on it is completely dead. Any help on what it could be?
