What are some good first car options?
I still have approximately 3 years until I can start learning to drive, but I'm excited to drive so I'm looking at potential cars that could be good as first cars. I'm looking for something reliable yet sporty and fun (I'm a car enthusiast). My maximum price budget is $14,500 at most, which I think is quite reasonable and should result in me being able to drive a decent car. I've been thinking of either a 2015 Subaru WRX because by the time I'm able to get a car of my own, the 2015 model will be 5 years old and the Subaru's are very reliable and still fast af. My second choice would be a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer because they can still look good once' they're modded, and the fuel efficiency seems to be pretty sustainable. My third choice would be a Lexus IS250 because they are sporty cars. I'm not very familiar with Lexus vehicles so I don't know if they have a good rep or not ect. I honestly would rather not have a Toyota or Honda because they seem basic and that isn't what I would like.
Nice to see a fellow enthusiast!
I see you're point of view, I've just bought my second car! (I'm 18)
You're options are quite interesting!
I know that the subies and the evos are appealing because of the AWD and all the blistering 0-60 speeds that you can achieve in straight lines. But trust me, you are NOT going to get a subie or an evo for that price. THEY DO NOT LOSE VALUE AT ALL! I learnt the hard way waiting for them to drop prices.
That being said, you're options are not blown out of the water. If you're looking at a first car, you're first priority should be reliable. My first car, which I'm currently selling, is a Mini Cooper JCW 2009. It is sporty, stylish, elegant, reliable, attractive, HAS AMAZING HANDLING (SERIOUSLY, I'VE TAKEN CORVETTES BY SURPRISE WITH THIS THING) and its GAS MILEAGE IS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH.
My budget was 12-13k. That's the best I could do. In five years, jack **** is going to change, and the second you get your license, your gonna want a car. So…
Get a Mustang. You want speed? This thing has it, and it doesn't stop. In five years, the GT 4.6's should sell around your price range, and if you want to push it, you might land a 5.0 for 15k. Mustang GT's are literally the cheapest cars to mod and maintain, and it comes with a power horse V8 with 350-odd horsepower attached. You get 0-60 in 5 seconds flat - and you can beat base WRX's and EVO's.
I don't like straight-line speed. So I chose Go-Kart handling and BMW tech instead.
Get a MINI. You WILL NOT REGRET IT AND DON't LET ANYONE TELL YOU ITS A BAD/***** CAR.
IF not, go JDM. YOU can get a 370z or new 350z for your range in five years. Both are faster than subies or Evos and would kill on the track.
And if none of those fit you, there are so many other options
G35/37
Acura TSX/TL Type S
Honda S2000 (owned one of these two… Killer car, don't let the name fool you)
Mazda RX-8
Audi S4
BMW M3
VW GTI
VW Golf R /R32 Rabbit
MazdaSpeed 3
Ford Focus ST / Fiesta ST
Pontiac Solstice / GTO
Dodge Dart SXT
You could land a project car: 1980s Supra and mod the hell out of it for 10k.
240SX
Chevy Cobalt SS
RX7
And many more. I like your choices, but your limiting your horizons. Keep an open mind, and I'm sure you will end up with something you like.
Not to be a downer, but almost all 16 year old guys wreck their first car within the first year or two.
Cut your budget 70%, buy a beater you don't care about and save the money for what you really want for once you have a few years of driving experience.
- Is a BMW E30 90-91 a good first car/ project car? I'm looking into getting my first car but also want something to build up and make my own. So far i want a rwd import. No Hondas. Any suggestions?
- Which car is better of these options? 2014 Mazda 3 2.0, 2014 Honda Civic LX sedan, 2014 Dodge Dart Rallye 2.4? I want a car in this category. I will commute to work so i want to save on gas and at the same time the car must have the best sporty look. Which of those is the best bang for the buck and why? Thank you! Other suggestions that are in that 18-22k price range are welcomed as long as they are not expensive like volkswagen since they are german.
- Should I sell my car? Or do I have options? I'm a 20 years old about to be 21 in 3 months. I have a 2008 honda civic si but I wanna know if I should sell it or refinance? I moved to florida on my own and I'm making 1500 a month with 2 jobs and my car payments are 400 a month a 300 for insurance. I love my car but it's to much money for me to afford 400 a month:/ is there anything I can do to keep my car or do I have to just sell it?
- First car options under 5.5k? I'm 17 and going to be buying my first car in the next few months. My budget is only 5.5k but I can afford to pay monthly insurance of around $230. What are some first car options other than Honda Civic? I'm a responsible driver, but I feel like buying a 03 mustang for 5 grand is a bad idea.
