1990 honda accord won't start, lost power to gas pedal while accelerating?

So i was taking my mom to the doctor and while i was acclerating the gas pedal wouldnt accelerate and the power sterring went out. I pulled over into a parking lot and parked it. When i tried to start it, it wouldnt turn. It wants to, but it just won't. When i try to start it, the starter just sputters

I don't really agree with the battery. It died while running, which only happens if the battery is completely discharged - at least enough that nothing at all happens when you try the starter. A bad connection would have killed the engine when the car came to a stop, not while accelerating. I also disagree with a clogged catalytic converter. I have never seen a converter suddenly clog - they gradually get worse, progressively restricting the top speed over a period of months, and even that is extraordinarily rare.

In a 1990 Honda there are a few common causes of that sort of behavior. The ignition switch is common but the engine usually restarts right away, even if it dies when you release the key. Different contacts for start and run. The fuel pump relay ("main" relay) often is responsible for hard start or no start, but rarely kills the engine once it is running. The igniter (ICM) fits the symptoms, as does a failed timing belt. The timing belt is easier to check but if it has been changed in the last 7 years is not likely to be the cause. See the source for checking the igniter (ICM).

You may have a clogged catalytic converter. If it runs okay for a while, then sputters and cuts off, then the converter is probably stopped up. After it cools off for about 30 mins, it will probably crank back up, but will cut off again once it heats back up. This is a common Honda problem.

He probably means that it got harder to steer, robert C. And like robert C said, check the battery. How old is it? Make sure it has a good connection at the terminals (corrosion, dirt, etc. Can cause it not to connect good). Be careful though, 12 volts suck to get hit with. Unlikely, but it may be the solenoid. If the lights were dimming before it shut off, it could be an issue with the alternator. All of which can be fixed rather easily. Wishing you luck.

Are you sure the power steering failed and that the engine didn't just die? If your engine cuts out while you're driving you lose your power steering, which could be what you experienced.

If the power steering failed, how did you get into a parking lot. Check your battery

Dead Battery.

  • Why won't my car won't start after putting in gas? I have a 2007 civic, 80,000 miles, about a year old battery. Yesterday after I filled up the gas tank my car wouldn't start. Waited about 1 minute and it started fine. This had happened about 4 months ago (I had it checked at Honda) and they said it was okay. But today I went a short distance (15 minutes from home left the car for about 5) and my car didn't want to start. What could it be?
  • My car won't start but when I try to start it, it sounds like a power drill? I have a 95 Honda Civic and it does not start it keeps making a noise that sounds like a power drill spinning. I have no idea what it is or could be any more. I've pulled the starter and put in a new one and the starter is still not catching the fly wheel. I have even resorted to charging the battery, checking all fluids (transmission, antifreeze, etc.) and putting in 5 gallons of gas but still nothing, can't pay to get it to a shop. Anything helps thanks.
  • 97 Honda Civic, new clutch and pressure plate but won't come out of gear and clutch pedal won't release? The clutch feels backwards now, won't switch gears unless the car is off and the pedal is all the way up. When you start it in gear it will not come out of said gear unless you turn the car off. The clutch pedal will get stuck down and the car will roll in whatever gear you put it in, when putting the clutch pedal down is supposed to release the clutch… It does not
  • 2012 Honda Civic won't start up unless I step on the gas pedal and turn key simultaneously? I have already changed 3 batteries over the course of approximately 90,000 miles. I recently changed the 3rd battery as well as the spark plugs, but the car still wouldn't start unless I step on the gas pedal first.
