2000 Honda Accord Timing Belt?

I'm buying a 2000 Honda Accord that has only 12,000 original miles. I'm buying it from a man that hasn't driven it a lot, it's been sitting a bit. He's done maintenance on it as far as in oil changes, there's a new battery. Should I have the timing belt change right away? Does it wear from just sitting or mileage?

Replace it right away. The rule is the specified mileage or 7 years, whichever comes first, because the belt is rubber. The belt is at twice the age limit.

I'd suggest you change it just because of the age. It's a rubber belt, and it will deteriorate over time.

Usually the manufacturer specifies xxx miles OR y years, which ever comes first.

After 14 years I would say it would be advisable to have it changed.
It's doesn't wear sitting, but it does age.
Spend the $200 to change it and have peace of mind.
