Cheapest Car insurance for teen drivers?
I'm a high school student who saved up enough money to buy a 2005 Honda Accord for relatively low mileage for about 4.5k. I work full time while going to school (Co-op) and make decently above minimum wage. I'm trying to figure out what car insurance I should buy… None of my family members can put me on their plan so I'm stuck buying my own but I've did a little bit of digging but all the car insurance are ridiculously high I'm talking $400-700 a month not even a 6 month plan. My brother who's 24 pays about $120 a month and I can't figure out why I'm being charged so much…
Your insurance will be high because you are young and a new driver
A) If you are still under 18 and live in the USA, you can't buy your own policy because under federal law you are not old enough to enter into any contractual agreements. An insurance policy is essentially a contract.
b) Driver statistics compiled by insurance companies, as well as the DOT and state agencies over the past 70 years show that on average, teen drivers have 3 times more accidents and violations than drivers over age 19, and 5 times more accidents and violations than drivers over age 24, Also, the #1 cause of teen fatalities nationwide is car accident. So, that's why car insurance for teens is so high - they are very high risk. You can't get around the fact that there's no inexpensive insurance for teens, especially male teens.
c) If you're smart, you'll sell the car and set aside that $400+ per month until you're age 21. By then you'll have over $20,000 in the bank.
There's NO SUCH THING as "cheap" car insurance for a teenage driver. The reason why your insurance costs so much is that teenage males, as a group, tend to have the most accidents. The insurance companies know this and set their prices accordingly. Your insurance will get cheaper as you get older and establish a history of safe, accident free driving, but for now you are in the most expensive group.
Because you're NOT 24 years old, that's why you pay more than your brother. There's no such thing as cheap car insurance for a teen driver. You are in the highest risk category of drivers and you will pay more because of that.
By having to buy your own insurance, and being a male teen, you pay the highest rates. However, $400-$700 a months seems unusually high, but it can depend on where you live, where you drive, how much you drive, your past driving record, and more.
Are you kidding? Because you're not even 18. Stick with your family's car or you're gonna have to deal with insane insurance monthly payments.
Your brother is 24, and that's the magic number when insurance rates begin to decline if you've had no accidents or other moving violations. Before that age, drivers age 15/16 thru age 24, seem to be the most likely to have an accident or receive tickets for driving violations. Since you're in that age group, your rates will be high for quite a few years. You can try companies like Gieco, Progressive or other discount insurance companies, but don't expect fast responses to any claims. Do some searches online and call the local insurance offices to see what they can do for you. The cost of insurance also depends on the vehicle you're insuring. The more the vehicle is worth, the higher the cost per month will be. Remember, the insurance company has to repair your vehicle ( if you have comprehensive coverage and liability both ) as well as the other vehicle if you're at fault in an accident. And you never know if the other driver has insurance if the accident is their fault. ( That's why you should always have full coverage ( liability and comprehensive coverage ) on a nice vehicle like you want to drive. Having good grades, a job, and a driver's education certificate ( completed or in process ) is very desirable for getting a discount on insurance.
Why won't your parents add you to their policy? Do they both hate you? Do they enjoy watching you pay double for your insurance. The ONLY reason they won't is because their either stupid or they are hateful towards you. If they are trying to "teach you a lesson", they failed.
Convince your parents to add you to their policy to reduce your costs by almost 50%. You can pay them for your portion of the bill.
If your under 18 and living with your parents, you need to be added to their policy if you want to drive anything. You can't get your own policy.
- Is a minivan a good first car for a teen? So I'm 17 and just got my license and I'm an excellent driver, according to myself and anyone who's ever rode in a car with me… My parents are going to give me their minivan which is a Honda Odyssey 2007. Not that I'm unappreciative of them giving me a car for free, but I wonder if this is safe? Since it's such a large car would it be safer to drive a sedan like a Civic or something?
