Does Volvo still make their cars like tanks?
Okay so my family currently has a Honda Accord which is nearing the end of it's life and we will soon be replacing it with another car. We commute a lot from the suburbs to the city and the miles seem to pile up rather quickly. My parents, especially my mother would prefer something roomy and reliable, a car that's easy to maintain which won't break our backs in terms of maintenance. Something which will last a long time. Neither of them want an SUV or a Minivan. We used to have a 1997 Toyota Avalon which was an absolute tank, we drove it upto 310,000 miles until we sold it. Our current Honda Acccord has done us well too.
Anyhow, we were thinking of getting a Volvo v70 Station Wagon from the years 2008-2010, would anyone know how reliable and durable these cars are? I know the Older Volvos, especially the 240s were absolute tanks, and I know after 1993 they had some problems in the late 90s and early 2000s. But what about from 2008 and up? Has their quality and reputation come back? Are the V70 wagons of those years still built like tanks to an extent? Please any help would be appreciated.
Since you mentioned that you don't want anything that is expensive to repair, I can't in good conscience recommend a Volvo. They're VERY expensive to repair once out of warranty.
Not any longer -
They are now build in the IKEA factory
Last tank volvo built was the 940 series. After that not the same car.
Since sold to china… Not a car I want at all
Had a 2007 Volvo and it was Not a 'tank'. I could not get satisfactory service. The dealership kept refusing to acknowledge a suspension problem, insisting everything was within specs. I finally had an independent shop fix it with adjustable, non Volvo parts. After it was off warranty, the 'check engine' light came on and I had the spark plugs replaced. 1500 miles later, the light was on again and they replaced the spark plugs again. The light came on a third time on our way home. This time the
dealership kept our car and gave us a new one to drive. We were to drive it for a day but ended up having it for a week while they studied our car. They decided that they could fix it for $1700. I insisted that for that price they should guarantee their repairs. The price then went up to $3400. I asked them to put our car together, and I would return theirs. We traded it off at another dealership before we left town. The car was fine (when everything was good) The service was not and the dealerships are far apart.
- Why do people get mad over the fact that their cars require full synthetic oil? I work as a mechanic and found some people do not like the fact 2010 and up toyotas and Hondas and almost all 2014 cars and European cars require full synthetic oil. A majority of the anger comes towards toyotas and Hondas. Despite me explaining the increased intervals, they still get angered at the fact. Is it just me or does less time doing oil changes that save you more money in the long run end up coming out cheaper despite the increased price and why would they be angry saving money?
- Why is it that some husbands let their wives drive luxury cars while they drive ordinary cars? I've been observing some of my neighbors (one of them is a stay at home mom) and the husbands drive ordinary cars like Honda Accord or Honda Pilot. But the wives tend to drive luxury cars like Acura TSX or Acura RDX (some form of luxury car). What is the reason for this? Why do wives get to drive luxury cars while the husband drives ordinary car? I should say some of them. Its not a problem though but was only curious. The neighbors are Asians actually.
- Are American cars more reliable now for a while people were just buying Japanese cars like Hondas and Toyotas? I really like the new Chevy Malibu, and I'm thinking about buying one but my dad gets mad and says "no! American cars are unreliable just buy a Honda or a Toyota"… Have times changed?
- Do you think parents should be obligated to buy their kids a car for their 16th birthday? So I turned 16 last Monday and I kept begging my parents to buy me a car, specifically a 2018 jeep wrangler. Instead all I got was a bunch of jewelry and makeup and a hand me down of my parent's honda accord. I'm very upset because I really wanted the new jeep wrangler. Do you think parents should buy their kids a car for their 16th birthday?
