If you have something draining your car battery, does it just require charging?
I just got a brand new car battery about a month and a half ago. Duralast Gold for 2007 Honda Accord, 2.4L (4 cylinder). I also have 250W amp with subwoofers (MTX Terminator set). They never gave my battery a problem this early on. The amp is brand new as well. I realized yesterday that my car now hesitates to crank. (I will be getting checked when they open) I know it's cold and it may take a little extra to crank but not as long as it's taking. My spark plugs are also new. Maybe about only a year old. Another question, if my audio system is draining the battery would that just require it to be charged and not completely replaced? I need all mechanic opinions thanks.
Get the battery load tested. They will tell you if it is toast or not. You can only charge it so many times then it will die. That amp is killing it.
A flat battery can be recharged, however you need to check a few things out to stop it getting discharged.
Top of the list, check the alternator is charging.
Secondly check the amplifier is only powered up when the engine is running. If it's powered up without the engine running it will discharge the battery quickly.
Thirdly ensure that the alternator is of sufficient capacity to recharge the battery with everything turned on. If your alternator can only output 55 amps and you draw 60 amps, you have a 5 amp net drain on the battery.
Go by a auto parts and they will load test your batty and ck. Your alt. For free.
Cold weather can do that. Take it to a good mechanic and find what is called a "parasitic draw". This is anything running while the car is not. Keyless entry, burglar alarm, or even a bad ground somewhere. Correct it.
Starters as they get older require more amps to turn over until eventually a car battery can no longer do that. Your starter could be getting ready to quit on you. What your car is doing is exactly what my van did. I would turn the key and after a second it would begin cranking. A week later, I turned the key, and the van wouldn't start. I waited a second, and it then started. This went on for a month before I put a new starter in, and the problem was solved completely.
If your audio system is drawing more power than your cars electrical system can provide, replacing the battery won't help. You need a stronger alternator, and MAYBE a second battery.
If something is draining the battery that "parasitic load" has to be identified and disconnected. There's no reason to think your nearly new battery is bad but there's a concern about the charging system. As Mark points out, the alternator may not be keeping up with the load from the audio system plus heater blower plus headlights… That is something that should be evaluated by a mechanic.
The only good news is that the battery will be warranted - a pro-rated warranty where replacement gets less "free" every month. The bad news is that cold weather, longer hours of using headlights, heater blower on more add up to the shortfall in charge getting progressively worse. Even if you replace the battery today all the problems will remain. It will need to be evaluated by a mechanic. Lots of us here would be able to do it but we don't have the car in front of us.
Spark plugs have nothing to due with a motor cranking/turning over. That's the battery, charging system, ignition switch or neutral safety switch. The amp should be on a circuit that turns off when the key is turned off and removed from the ignition switch. The alternator needs to be charging the battery with at least 13.7 volts at 1200 rpm. If you have voltage draw when the vehicle is left sitting you need a good mechanic to diagnose what's causing the voltage draw.
Your battery is not charging when your engine is running the alternator runs the cars electrics the battery is not used check the earth on the battery to the car or its a fan belt slipping do you have an ignition light does it remain on or glimmer the alternator is faulty
Yes
- How long does it take for loan max to repossess your car after your loan due date in Ohio? I took out an $800 title loan on my 2000 Honda Oddyssey (188,000 miles) and I can't make the initial repayment amount of $288 on time. How long will it be before they send someone out to repossess my car? I live in Ohio and I'm really afraid they will repossess it before I can come up with the cash.
- My radio in my car is draining my battery? I pulled the fuse to the stock amp that is in my car so I could hear the difference in sound with the fuse out. Now that I have taken it out and put it back in I have noticed that my battery will drain in less than 5 minutes if I have my radio on with the engine off. I feel like now I have caused a short of some sort and now its draining my battery. What could I do to solve this and will it be expensive?
- How do you increase your MPG on your car? I got 60mpg in my Honda Civic recently for 100 miles by coasting downhill and increasing air in tires by 5psi. How do you do it?
- HONDA CIVIC 2013 OWNERS; How long can your car run on empty gas until your car finally just stops? I run on E all the time, and I'm always scared that one day it will just stop… Knock on wood, it hasn't happened yet and I hope it doesn't! But i'm just curious to see if any of you have had this happen to you, and how long you traveled on E? It's good to keep in mind!
