Is $450 a great price to replace a rear main seal on an old 2000 Honda Accord?
The dealer wants $1,400 for labor because they say it's an 11 hour job & they charge $125 per hour. But a local shop said they will do it for $450. My everyday mechanic wants $1,000. It's a lot of work because they have to drop the tranny. But for a 2000 accord with 150k miles which price point would you go with paying?
$450 sounds unbeatable. Just so they do good work.
Rea main seal on what? The axle? The transmission? Roof liner?
I've found local repair shops to be much more economical than dealer shops. Dealers charge an extraordinary labor rate that local shops can easily beat, even when they get their parts from the dealer.
The price is TOO GOOD to be true be very careful and remember the old saying you get what you pay for
Go to the local shop. Make sure you put a factory (Honda dealer) seal. If it leaks again, sell the car.
That price is great. Make sure they warranty their work.
$450 is a great price, a price so low I doubt they could do the job correctly for that low a price. You need to drop the tranny or put the engine, you can't do that in just 2 hours. You need to ask why you don't trust your everyday mechanic, $800 to $1,000 is a reasonable price.
You sure it's not a valve cover gasket or an oil pressure warning light switch leaking and running down the back of the motor? When those two items leak the oil ends up dripping in the same spot that a main seal leaks at. I've pulled Honda transmissions out and back in in 5 hours so someone is hosing you.
Main dealers charge way over the odds. It's your money.
