Just got my license. What car should I buy?

I just turned 16 and I got my license. I have been saving up my money and my dad said he would help pay for the car (not specifying how much). I was wondering what kind of car is best for a person like me. Is it better to get a bigger car (more money, more safety, however, more distractions when carrying more people.) or a smaller car (less money, less safety, less distractions because your not carrying as many people)? Also is it better to buy new as a first car and have be the first owner and have it through high school and college, or buy used? I know the Honda Accord and Honda Civic are good cars but thats not really my "style." I've been looking at the Volkswagen Golf, the Mazda 3, and the Subaru Outback. But there are so many different cars out there.

Look for a Subaru STI model; They're both fast and reliable

Of the cars you mentioned, the Mazda3 is the best but you should seriously consider a Honda Civic for a lot of good reasons. The Civic has more accessories and performance aftermarket parts than any other car. And the 2-door coupe is not a bad looking car.

Buy used. You avoid most of the depreciation, which is your biggest car expense. Small cars are easier to park, get better gas mileage, and you'd be surprised that in most cases the back seat can fit 2-3 adults comfortably. Get a Mazda 3 if you don't live in an area that gets lots of snow for rust reasons. Other small cars to consider include the Hyundai Accent or Elantra, Toyota Echo, Subaru Impreza or forester, 05-10 Ford Focus and Honda Fit. The Accord and Civic are long past the days in the 90s when they refused to die on you. VWs fall apart after 5 years. Subarus are worth it if you need a no nonsense AWD system.
