What's wrong with my power steering hose?

My high pressure power steering hose on my 1999 Honda Accord ex what leaking so I got a new one and installed it, when I tightened it on the threads on the bottom it seemed to be on right but as soon as I turn on the car it leaks out of the threads and it isn't drivable, I'm guess I'm going to have to get it towed and taken to a mechanic, what's wrong with it and how much do you think it will cost for it to be put on correctly?

Did the new hose fitting come with an O-ring or gasket seal of any sort? If not, you might need to take it back.

I don't do any work on Hondas but a high pressure hose should require more than just a flange nut to secure the hose.

Sounds like you either cross threaded the line or you got a defective hose. Pull the line and look at the fitting to see if you stripped it if not try again and tighten it up a bit more than you did the first time

  • What kind of power steering fluid? I have a 05 Hyundai elantra and the power steering fluid is red. Dark red, and a friend of mine told me to use Honda fluid in it when I replace it, I siphoned some out and put a bit of Honda fluid it but the Honda fluid is clear, is this a problem? And what kind of fluid should I use? He said the Honda fluid lubricates the system better than a generic multipurpose fluid. Its probly 1/2 Honda fluid now mixed with the old fluid.
  • Is $800 a lot for a power steering flush? I went to my local mechanic, said it could use a flush due to my car being really hard to steer at times, and told me it would be $800 for a complete flush for my '03 Honda Pilot. Should I look somewhere else?
  • Does power steering fluid get hot if the car is just running and the steering isn't being used? If the pump is just spinning, recirculating fluid and nothing else… Would it still get hot? I had to bypass the pump from the rack and have the fluid recirculate. Would the pump get hot from just spinning? I know 8th gen Honda's don't have a cooler for the power steering anyways.
  • Power steering fluid leaking from the base of the steering column? I have a 2002 Honda Civic and I noticed that there's power steering fluid leaking at the base of the steering column. I can't find anything about it online and don't want to take it to a mechanic if its something that I can figure out. Could this be the rack and pinion? Or is it just something simple? Anybody dealt with this issue before?
