Will sheet metal screws hold a license plate?

I'm selling my 2006 Honda Accord soon, and the front license plate was stolen or fell off. The replacement bracket costs $40, there are no aftermarket equivalent, and is a pain in the --- to install - I know because the same thing happened a few years ago.

So I just bought a universal license plate holder, and want to drill into the bumper. Can I just use sheet metal screws (pointy tips), will they hold up? Or self-drilling zinc? Or I have to use fasteners, or toggle bolt? Etc.

You don't need to drill for sheet metal screws or self drillers. You just can't really tighten them good. If you can get behind use screws with a nuts and washers on the back.

Drill holes for nuts and bolts, use either locking nuts or shake washers because of vibration.

  • Install front license plate bracket myself, or at dealership? Cost difference? I know it'll be cheaper to install it myself, but I'm afraid to damage the front bumper since I have to drill holes to attach the bracket. If a dealership does it they'll know exactly how to do it since they do it all the time. It's Honda that I'd be dealing with. I know they're expensive, but would a bracket installation really be that bad through them?
