Car Steering wheel and brake pad shake when driving or stopping?

When I drive my car (usually)… The steering wheel shakes slightly. Sometimes it shakes more, or not at all. Also when braking I notice the brake pad pulsating & the car feels like it's slightly jerking to stop. Last thing the car sometimes makes a noise coming from the brakes when it's shut off.

*I had the car inspected by Honda, they couldnt find the problem but DID say:

- Front/Rear brakes linings needs attention.
- Front pads LOW.
- Shock absorbers/struts needs attention.
- Lower ball joint boot leaks grease.

They told me this after they said everything was fine, so I was confused. I plan to get those things fixed, but do you think those things are the problem?

I'm a female and even I know that all of those faults will make the steering shake.
Your car is unroadworthy, get it fixed.

Those items should not cause the problem you described. This is probably why the said everything was fine (related to the symptoms you described). The other items they listed were found based on their visual inspection. When they replace your pads, they should also turn or replace the rotors. The rotors may be the cause of the shaking while braking. I would also have your tires checked for proper balance. Often the shaking of the steering wheel is related to the tires being out of balance. There are weights on the tire rim which are used to balance the tires. If one of the weights falls off, it to throw the tires "out of balance" and cause the shaking of the steering wheel.

Those things aren't the problem.

You have unbalanced tires that cause the shimmy while driving. The pulsating brake pedal is due to warped front rotors. Have them replaced, add new pads, balance the tires, and your good to go.

Classic symptom of warped brake rotor. They pointed at a lot of things that need attention, but for the shimmy, replace the rotors and brake pads. Don't forget to apply anti-squeal compound to the back sides of the new brake pads so they won't squeak.

If it were just the steering wheel alone, I would suspect your alignment is off, pointing to some sort of suspension issue. However, there are certain situations where bad brakes can make the car pull to the left and right. Struts are something that usually have to be dealt with eventually, but it's not one of those repairs that generally need to be done As soon as possible unless they are broken. A worn out ball joint will definitely affect steering. They probably said everything was fine because they couldn't reproduce the problem. This is what I can tell you sight unseen.

Buy a new car with warranty if you don't know how to maintain your car.

  • Why does my 2008 Honda Fit intermittently shake when AC is on, in drive, and foot on brake? The shake is every 2 to 10 seconds, darn short each time, and hardly strong. (If it happens when I'm driving then it would be hard to notice). It definitely does not happen when in park or the AC is off. Three weeks ago I got a rebuilt transmission. This started for the first time 3 days ago.
  • Does power steering fluid get hot if the car is just running and the steering isn't being used? If the pump is just spinning, recirculating fluid and nothing else… Would it still get hot? I had to bypass the pump from the rack and have the fluid recirculate. Would the pump get hot from just spinning? I know 8th gen Honda's don't have a cooler for the power steering anyways.
  • Why does my 2014 Civic Si have red honda badges on front and back and on steering wheel? I bought a new Honda Civic Si from the dealership and the guy said that it was one of 10,000 models of that year, it looks nice but i want to know how accurate this is. Why does it have red badges? And why does my engine cover look white instead of black like they are on other Si's? Please answer!
  • Steering wheel and brakes got still when I turned the car on? I drive a 2008 Honda Civic with 240k on it, today, I parked my car, put her in park and shut her off. I got back in later on, started her up and put her in reverse. When I tried to back out the steering wheel almost wouldn't move and the brake was the same way. I put her back in park, shut her off, turned her back on and everything was good. I have all new parts on it, or just about, and this is the first time it's happened as far as I know. Any advice on what this could be?
