97 Honda Civic Transmission slipping?

My transmission is slipping. It has since I've gotten it 3 years ago. I have never done anything more than add Lucus adhesive. The color of the fluid now is brown. I understand their supposed to be ruby red. I've gotten recommended not to change the whole Luis because the newer fluid may be too thin and the tranny will just slip even more. Is this true? Also what should I do? Just had genuine Honda transmission fluid in? Like 1quart? Should I flush it and completely replace it? I want a smoother ride without spending too much. The idea of a new transmission is just out of the question, way too expensive. ANY INFO WILL Help

If you want to change the fluid, 3 gallons of maxlife at walmart is 55.00
Do not have it "flushed"
Do the drain, add 3 quarts, drive cycle, 3 times procedure

1. Set the parking brake, and raise the vehicle on a lift.
2. Drain the trans, and refill it.
3. Start the engine, shift into Drive, and release the parking brake.
4. Push down on the accelerator pedal to raise the vehicle speed to 2,500 rpm.
- If the trans shifts past 2nd gear, go to step 5.
- If the trans won't shift past 2nd gear, keep the engine speed at 2,500 rpm and shift from Drive to Neutral and back to Drive. Then go to step 5.
5. Make sure that the trans shifts through all the forward gears and goes into torque converter lockup.
6. Let off the accelerator pedal, and press the brake pedal to drop the vehicle speed to zero. Shift into
Reverse and then into Neutral.
7. Shift into Drive, and repeat steps 4 thru 6 four more times.
8. Set the parking brake, and repeat steps 2 thru 6 two more times.
9. Drain the trans, and reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer.

Adding Lucas treatment didn't help matters at all. Drain it and fill it, drive it, three times by all recommendations, to get the old fluid out. Do not put additives in it. Do not have it flushed. Either Honda Genuine ATF (expensive) or other approved for Honda usage fluids.

Valvoline MaxLife DEX/MERC ATF.
