What kind of car should I buy my college-age son? - 1

I wasn't going to buy him one, but he came home for the weekend and said he really needed one at ASU.

I was reading an article that the Honda Civic and Buick LeSabre would great for kids going to school. But I was talking to our neighbor and she bought her son an old BMW, like 2011, and her son didn't talk to her for weeks. I want my kid to have a good time at college and not be embarrassed, but the article said these two cars were really good for teenagers.

Again he is going to ASU where all the pretty people are so I want him to have something that is cool cuz he is rushing frats.

I was kinda iffy when I read about the Honda and then they said the Buick, so this may be made up or something.

Heck, I drove a $400 Toyota and did just fine. If a kid has problems 2011 Beemer, he will probably fail at life once out of college. I'd buy him a cheap beater and let him learn how to work his but off to buy a status symbol.

Or, get him a bicycle and good lock. (Biked 25 miles a day for school to save on insurance and gas on my $400 Toyota).

An old one $3500 to $5000

I would by something "reliable" and cheap on gas. When I say reliable something that can actually run and is quite good on millage, preferably a 4 cylinder engine car, one where parts would be easy to attain and relatively cheap to fix.

For instance I have a 4 clylinder Toyota Corolla 1994. Parts for this car are so easy to find and I have had to learn in my college years to maintain and fix issues before they became bigger ones.Honda civics look "cool" when they are done up with tints and mag wheels whilst being very good on gas and access for parts.

Cars such as Toyota Corollas, Honda Civics, Nissan Primeras, Nissan Sentras in the 1994 to 1999 year range are some of the 4 cylinder cars you can choose from and price ranges are around $1500 to $2500 range. I would also suggest getting a person who knows a little about cars to go with you to check out the potential car you want to buy for oil leaks, water collant leaks, wheel allignment issues, overheating issues etc. In this way you don't buy something that is on the verge to distinction or which will create bigger problems down the track.

So in short something reliable and fairly cheap on gas, 4 clylinder engines are always a good start until your Son can afford to get something more substantial. In the end of the day "cool" is not always going to be reliable and for someone heading to college I would give him something that will last through and keep him focused on college and not just on his image. I'm not giving any parental advice just speaking from my own college experience. Good luck and if in doubt of a purchase swing by a mechanic for a full inspection. It may cost a little for it but it is a good investment in the long run encase further issues arrive. Goodluck with your search.

Get him a smaller front wheel drive hatchback, so he can haul his college stuff back and forth.

  • What age car should I choose for delivery pizza job? When shopping for used car, I noticed same make and model values dropped fast from brand new into few years old. Now I saw one 10 years old for 5999. 15 years old for 4999, 20 years old for 3999, 25 years old for 3499. Which would you choose? It's all same manufacturers make and model. All 4 of them have 40,000 miles on it. I got all of them inspected and they all excellent conditions. They all are Honda. Which would you pick?
  • Should I let my son do this? He wants to buy a Honda S2000 with 73,000 miles for $12,500 with his own money. I'm ok with it but I advise him not to. He wants to buy it now knowing how hard it is to come across a 2001 With that low of miles in great condition witch i believe is true. This will be his first car and he is a responsible driver but should I let him buy it? Part of me says yes and the other half no.
