What would be a good car for me?

I'm 23 years old, engaged, have a full time job and no children. My engine died yesterday and it's too costly to buy a new one, so I'm deciding on buying a used car at a nice certified dealership. I'm looking for something decent on gas milage, doesn't have a huge amount of room, but at the same time, won't cram me inside. I want something somewhat stylish looking, and not too expensive with parts like Dodge and BMW are. I was thinking something American made. My last car was a Honda civic. Any ideas?

Go with another Honda! They are sleek and great on gas. They also last long. I hear nothing but wonderful comments about Hondas!

You my friend need a subaru. Better than a boring honda

Honda is a very good car! Now if your ready to make a little commitment and ready to buy something from a dealership. You might as well get something little nicer. Volkswagon are very good cars as well. Now a lot of people will say they aren't good cars, but they've never owned one. I have a 2007 jetta. Super clean super simple and extremely reliable. It all comes down to what your budget is and what you like.

If you and your soon-to-be spouse are considering having children in the future, I would definitely consider at least a mid-size car. The Accord, Ford Fusion, and Mazda6 are all excellent choices in that market segment. They all have four-cylinder engines at least, good build quality. Not sure what kind of mileage you got in the Civic, but the EPA ratings on all those cars are very good.

A CPO car will, on average, cost about $2000 more than a "regular" used car, all other things being equal. The only reason to spend the extra $$$ is if you get a *bumper-to-bumper* factory warranty extension. Ford does offer this; I don't know about Honda. If all they offer is a powertrain warranty, I'd pass; most powertrains (engine / transmission) will last for 150,000+ miles with normal maintenance. On modern cars, it's the gadgets that will get you.

One more thing: if you are going to get a certified pre-owned car, buy from a dealership that sells that particular brand. A Chevy Malibu certified by a Ford dealership may be a good car and a good deal, but again, the warranty may be useless.
