Should I buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda CRV, Subaru Forester, or Land Rover Discovery?
I'm a little ignorant about cars and I'm getting ready to buy, so some advice would be super helpful.
First of all, I have $3000-4000 to spend. I have been looking at used cars on Craigslist Denver from dealers and owners, and I have narrowed my choices down based on what I want and what seems to be available locally within that price range. I have narrowed it down to:
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Subaru Forester
Honda CRV
Land Rover Discovery
So here is what I'm looking for:
4 wheel drive
Automatic transmission
Not too big, but
Very safe in snow and inclement weather
These all look like great cars, I'm just having trouble deciding what is best. I definitely prefer a 6-cyl, but I was also wondering what the downsides are of a 4-cyl as I'm highly considering a Honda CRV but I think it may be a 4. Would that be a terrible compromise to make? Not looking for any off-roading, long trips, or the like, at least not most of the time. Maybe an occasional road trip. So I may be willing to settle for a 4-cyl unless you can give me a good reason not to.
The ads I've been saying mostly range in year from 1998-2001 for all of these cars.
Please don't suggest any different cars as these are the ones that are available that suit my needs.
Thank you all for your help! Any and all things I should consider when buying these cars is welcome. I'm aware that I need to look out for rust on Jeeps but other than that, I don't know much about any of these cars.
It's a toss up between the CRV and the Forester. According to consumer reports, those 2 are least problematic. Any one of those will be good in the winter as long as you have good sets of winter tires and you drive carefully. The fact that the Honda is a 4cyl won't be an issue.
Jeeps have reliability issues at that age. The Land Rover is like the jeep, only more expensive to fix.
The CRV and the Forrester are going to be more reliable vehicles in general. The CRV probably more so than the forrester. The Forresters are good cars, but they have some head gasket issues. The CRV always ranks as a top performer in the reliability department.
The Jeeps of that age are going to start having problems. The Land Rovers are going to have problems and be expensive to fix. The will also get worse MPG's.
The CRV doesn't have a v-6. The trade off is less power for better fuel economy.
By your budget, I imagine overall value and economy are important. So, I'd say that a 4 cylinder is the choice for you for operating costs and repair costs. Also, you are going to want a dead reliable vehicle.
You need to get ANY used car you buy professionally inspected, but I think the CRV is probably your safest and best bet. After that, the forrester. Just make sure that it has had at the head gasket redone or checked out as okay.
Forrester and even look up all cars online and read about them and you will see the Forrester is better
If 4wd "security" is all you're looking for, you'll probably want the CRV. Security is in quotes because 4wd does nothing but get you going quicker. Doesn't help you slow down or save you from avoiding a potential wreck. Common sense and 4 winter tires are how you drive on Colorado snow, 4WD or not.
Yes, the Forester is a good choice. However, as mentioned, you may have to deal with common head gasket repair with a 2.5 non-turbo Forester. Plus they can sometimes suck on the highway thanks to lack of sound deadening materials and frameless windows (even worse if you use those windows to close the door, which throws the window out of alignment and creates wind noise). Also, since you're a Denver resident, non-turbo Subaru engines can sometimes be gutless in Colorado altitude. Obviously, this doesn't stop thousands of Denver residents from owning such a Subaru, but it's something to think about if you plan on going up Rabbit Ears pass to Steamboat Ski Resort, Aspen, Vail, etc. Etc. If you're willing to deal with all that, definitely consider the Forester. They're popular for a reason up here in the Rockies.
Honda CRV is the cheapest and the most reliable of the bunch.
If you don't like big cars the you won't like the lad rover it the jeep. The forester comes with an ego (if you drive a Subaru, everyone will assume your a hippie and love dogs and don't eat gluten etc)
So the CRV is the most logical choice
- Jeep Cherokee, Mazda CX-5, or Honda CR-v? I've been racking my brain trying to figure which car to buy. Honda been having quality issues lately. And I never hear anything about Mazda. Which one should I go for? I'll be taking road trips and I commute to go to school.

- Is the new Jeep Cherokee good off road? Specifically the base Sport model with FWD. I know it's not gonna be rock crawling or mud bogging, but with a good set of all terrains, could it handle occasional dirt roads/trails/wet grass? Do the base models have under body protection? I mean I could just buy a Honda CR-V or Toyota Rav4 if it's at the same level. What about a Cherokee sport with 4WD? Would it be any better?
- Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Rogue, or Subaru Forester? My grandma is looking for a new car and she'd prefer a small SUV. My family has no experience with Subaru and very little with Honda and Nissan, but my parents have had a very good experience with our 2013 Hyundai Sonata. From what I've heard, the Honda will hold its value the best but Hyundai offers a 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty.
