Do dealership Auto Techs get tool discounts?

I'm in a Honda PACT program, and we get approx 55-60% off of Snap On, Mac, Matco, NAPA, and Fastenal. And a couple others I can't remember right now. Big question is, will this discount vanish once I graduate and go to the dealership? Or will it continue? If it's only for students, I better buy up as many tools as I can while I can.

There are tool box lists of tools we'll need for the classes, and some of the lists would cost over $6000 without the discount, but with the discount we'd get them for $2500. I could probably get financial aid for that stuff since it's required (just as textbooks are).

You're getting a discount because you're a student. Once you get in the real world, you will pay full price for your tools unless they are on sale.

Take advantage of the Pact program and make sure you are getting lifetime guaranteed tools. I use Snap-on, Mac and Matco, and while I don't get a discount per se, I do negotiate with each independent dealer and never pay full retail. Once you get started you will build a relationship with the tool dealers that visit your shop.

  • Is it better to become a auto technician at a dealership or open up your own shop? I like Ford, Toyota, Honda, Porsche. I'm aware that most dealerships uses flat rate system and I do have some knowledge about cars in general. I work at a private auto shop as of currently. • How much could I get the dealership to come down on the price of this vehicle? 'm looking at a 2012 Honda Civic Lx for 13,500$. It only has 36,000 miles on it. It's at a Honda dealership. I really like it, but my budget is low. Do think I could get them down to 10,000$? I'm paying cash also. But I do want warranty. Kelley Blue Book says the car is worth 14,329. I'm really thinking that there's no way in hell I will get this deal, but if any of you have had a lucky experience, let me know.
