I left the cap off of my engine after filling it with oil?

I have a 1996 Honda (ancient, I know). I drove on the highway for about 30 minutes and although I smelled the oil, I was certain it was probably from when I gassed up my car, only because the oil smelled like gas. As soon as I got home, I checked my gas tank but everything was fine. Checked under my hood and that's when I realized my mistake. Oil was all over the underside of my hood and on my engine. I know wiping it down will help but I have to drive 20 minutes to work at 5 AM (7 hours from now). Will my engine be fine just enough to make the commute from home to work? If it helps, I drive about 60-65 MPH on the highway.

It will stink for quite a while but it will be fine. Wipe off as much as you can. I just had this happen to me a couple of months ago.took several weeks for the smell to dissipate. Expect a little smoke too until it all burns off, its fine.

The smell will certainly be there. Just make sure there isn't a lot to the point it could create a potential fire hazard with any hot equipment. Any degreaser solution CAUTIOUSLY applied and CAREFULLY rinsed away can help. As you know, check the oil level!

It's not fine for your engine to be spraying oil out and all over everything.

Did you fine your oil cap… If so then in the morning or now go pull out your oil dip stick if that oil covers just the bottom tip then you are good to make it to work but if you pull out that dip stick and it's dry don't try it. Some on here might think best to to start the car and check after the oil has circulated but either way if that would work I believe… But don't drive long on low oil… I don't think you ran it dry.

  • Accidentally Took out the wrong engine cap in my Motorcycle while trying to drain the Engine Oil? My Motorcycle is a Honda XRM. I was trying to change engine oil but opened a different screw/cap just beside the engine oil drain.A 5 inch long spring and a rod with holes came out, i put it back the way i think it should be, then opened the Drain cap, drained the engine oil and filled it with new oil. But when i start the motorcycle it sounded like there's something loose moving inside the engine. What is the rod and spring that came out? Is it critical?

  • Oil Change: Honda Motor Oil Vs Generic oil, does it make a difference? I have been getting oil changes with Honda motor oil for 15 years on my 2002 civic that now has 132K miles. If I switch to a generic $10 oil change garage shop will it still be ok? I know the Honda filters are better then the cheapest generic ones but how about the actual motor oil?
