Bought a 1985 Honda inspector kid told me it needed new battery but started with jump got new battery and it was dead next day?
Pretty sure its the alternator just wanted some second opinions also I got the bike for 600 dollars you guys think thats a good deal
Test the alternator. Google it.
Was that new battery FULLY charged before installing? A quick charge at the shop is not enough.
Before replacing any parts have them tested first with a multimeter, may be the alternator/stator OR the regulater/rectifier. Why replace the wrong part?
A multimeter reading should show about 13.5+V going to the battery from the rectifier, the voltage from the stator to the rectifier varies from bike to bike but is much higher, like having a AC/DC power convertor to your computer from a wall socket.
PS- As for the price, well thats a deep subject. May your wishs come true.
Assuming it's a fully charged new battery (like read the resting voltage, dude), check the charging voltage across the battery with the engine running at around 3,000 rpm. It should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts. If not, it could be the stator, the regulator / rectifier, the wiring, or the connections. Gotta check stuff, dude. You are really handicapped without a digital multimeter and a charger. Here's the simplest possible battery voltmeter. Even a complete idiot should be able to check lead-acid, AGM, and LiFePO4 resting voltages with it. Optimate makes a similar unit that indicates cranking and charging voltages.
It's more likely to be the rectifier which is a common problem with Honda's. Get it tested before spending money on parts you may not need.
There are 2 things that it is most likely. First start with a new battery. Then start the motorcycle but while it's idling test the battery voltage with a voltage meter and it should read around 13 (turn the voltage meter to 20) or 13.5 or higher but… If it shows lower like 12 or 12.5 then the Stator is most likely bad. The stator is by the left foot area the round thing that the chain goes around near the front of the motorcycle. If however the motorcycle is going higher like 15 or 16 on the voltage meter then it is most likely the rectifier which is about the size of a small pack of cigarrettes. Basically the Stator creates the voltage and the rectifier make sure the voltage is not too high or not too low and regulates it. Sometimes they call the rectifier the regulator. See below
- Dealer told me it was a Honda Certified pre-owned car, but I never received anything from Honda saying so? What should i do? The car now needs repairs and the dealer lied to me about the certification. Do I have any rights?
- I let my car sit for 3 months and the battery died. I tried to jump it but it would start? I Tried jumping my car by connecting the jumper cable plugs to it for like 1 min and few seconds… Should I keep the jumper cables in longer or do I just need to buy a new battery. I drive a honda civc 2008. *Wouldn't
- Got a car, no life and wanna drive away to somewhere new and start a new life but how? I'm older, my parents are getting elderly. My sibling is in rehab and my family onlycares about him. I have no friends, no kids and i'm tired of living in my state for 35 years. Seeing the same ppl, same buildings, ugh. I just bought a new honda and honestly i just wanna get in my car and go. I have no money tho and only have a associate degree. What should i do? Apply to a college out of state? Just leave?
- Car ran fine then wouldn't start, got a jump, now everything is fine again. What happened? '03 Honda Civic. Last 30 mins of work I sat in my car with the A/C on full blast and radio on, like I do everyday (and of course the car is running). I stopped at Subway after work. The car was parked for 10 mins. After the car would not start but the radio and dash board lights would come on, but it would not crank. Got a jump from AAA. Afterwards Auto Zone tested the battery and alternator, both passed. I has been a week now and no problems. What the heck could have happened?
