Is a Honda CBR300r a decent starter motorcycle?

About a week ago I asked the community if a Honda CBR600rr is a good starter motorcycle for a 17 year old. Well I received many answers saying that it is not fun to ride a 160mph racing bike on the street and that I'd easily get into an accident, which is probably true. I've been doing some research and I've come across the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and Honda CBR300r, which I've heard are great starter bikes. I prefer the Honda because it's lighter than the Kawasaki and it has a much nicer design. The engine on the Honda is only a 286cc which is probably enough for me since I'm only going to ride it to school and around my town. I'm not risking my life on the highway I'll tell you that! What are your guy's honest opinions?

Good enough place to start but don't discount finding a nice used Ninja 250 or 300 as they are a bit cheaper to buy-in and cheaper on the insurance side also.

Yes, the CBR 300 is actually a great beginning bike. A guy at work just bought a brand new one, and he loves it. Looks great, too. It could easily out-accelerate my 1985 Honda Magna, at least in the first few seconds.

Do you want transportation, or do you want to play racer? Sport bikes are designed for racing. Sporty bikes like the CBR300R are designed to look like a race bike so people can pretend they are racing on the streets. It is "decent" for a starter bike only because it is better than a full bore racing motorcycle. But playing racer on the streets is still an easy to die, if you are lucky.

If you are "… Only going to ride it to school and around my town… Not risking my life on the highway…" why the **** do you want a 100 mph motorcycle? Do you want to ride or do you want to pretend you are racing? Do you want *style* or do you want a bike designed for the job you want?

Yeah, the 300 is considered by others as a "decent starter motorcycle." And if you want the racer look and want to be able to hit 100 mph on the highway -- get it!

IMHO, the Honda Grom 125 is a better bike. Or a SYM Wolf 150.

It's not only not fun it's a really bad idea. Get something less focused and more fun to learn on. You'll crash this inside 6 months.

  • What's a good starter motorcycle? I've rode dirtbikes since I was 5 and I just realized I turn 16 in 20 days. So I worked all summer to get a car but f*** a car, is rather get a bike. I have about $2000 that I want to put toward a motorcycle. I really want something lower in cc like around 250cc. I want name brand no Chinese junk. I wanted a something like a cbr or a ninja but my parents say it's a death trap. So what we narrowed it down to is the honda shadow style bikes. What are some other bikes like that?
  • What's a good starter motorcycle similar to the Honda Rebel? I'm 5'10, and weigh 150 pounds. I like the honda rebel, but i realize that it may be too small for me. I want a good looking, easy to ride, starter bike that has freeway capabilities.
  • What is a great starter motorcycle? I have found an '87 Honda CBR1000 for a good price on craigslist, but I don't know if 1000cc's will be too much or not. I really like the look of the bike, and wouldn't mind have it. I have a budget of around $1,000-$1,500.
  • What is a good starter vintage motorcycle? I'm looking for my first vintage bike (70's-80's) I want to start with something cheap, Honda cl350 perhaps? I do want something that had been known for reliably. I also happen to like the look of lowered handlebars. Is their a name for this? Can any bike adapt with this mod?
