What is a great starter motorcycle?

I have found an '87 Honda CBR1000 for a good price on craigslist, but I don't know if 1000cc's will be too much or not.

I really like the look of the bike, and wouldn't mind have it. I have a budget of around $1,000-$1,500.

Not only too big, but the wrong kind of bike to be learning on. AND too old! A bike this old, you can have just one problem after another on it. And parts are not easy to find.

It can do over 150 mph. That's not too much.

It is a great starter motorcycle if you just want to park it and admire it and sit on it imagining you are racing.
It is a pitiful motorcycle to learn how to ride, to actually ride, to go places.

With a budget of $1,000-$1,500 you can get a big old bike to keep repairing small things breaking; or you can get a small reliable motorcycle to ride.

So what do you want? Repair or ride?

While learning how to ride a 1000cc sport-bike is like buying stainless screws to hold a cardboard coffin together because they don't rust.

Find someplace to teach you a few things about riding and it seems that you should start off by taking a MSF Basic Riders Course OR you'll be dead in a couple hundred feet down the road.

They didn't make the CBR 1000 until 2004! Do you mean an 07? Either way you will not get any CBR 1000 for $1500 anywhere
The earlier CBR 900s were introduced around 1992 ish

  • My husband is great at auto repair? So he has built and rebuilt transmissions. On a Honda Toyota and Chevys and replaced engins as well. So don't you think he can do a heater core replacement. Or is this job in a league of its own.
  • What's a good starter motorcycle? I've rode dirtbikes since I was 5 and I just realized I turn 16 in 20 days. So I worked all summer to get a car but f*** a car, is rather get a bike. I have about $2000 that I want to put toward a motorcycle. I really want something lower in cc like around 250cc. I want name brand no Chinese junk. I wanted a something like a cbr or a ninja but my parents say it's a death trap. So what we narrowed it down to is the honda shadow style bikes. What are some other bikes like that?
  • What's a good starter motorcycle similar to the Honda Rebel? I'm 5'10, and weigh 150 pounds. I like the honda rebel, but i realize that it may be too small for me. I want a good looking, easy to ride, starter bike that has freeway capabilities.
  • What is a good starter vintage motorcycle? I'm looking for my first vintage bike (70's-80's) I want to start with something cheap, Honda cl350 perhaps? I do want something that had been known for reliably. I also happen to like the look of lowered handlebars. Is their a name for this? Can any bike adapt with this mod?
