Want to rebuild engine. What work will I need a machine shop for?

I have done a lot of minor car work myself, but this is the first time I've looked into doing an engine rebuild. It's a Honda b18c, and I'm just wondering what work I could likely do myself with basic garage tools, and what work I'll definitely need a machine shop for?

If you are confident in yourself, then all the engine parts obviousely, and the tools needed to disassemble the engine

You will need much more than "basic tools"! A honing machine, piston ring compressor, etc etc… You can ask a shop if the price for a rebuild would be less if you remove the top end BUT it's not likely

After disassembly take the bare block, the head and the crankshaft to the machine shop. Have them boil the block to get all the gunk out of it, check the bores and the deck and correct any out of tolerance conditions. That will also include removing the ridge from the top of the bores and honing the bores. Have them do a valve job and service on the head to insure it is flat and has no cracks. They will also check the crank for correct tolerance on the bearing throws and correct any deficiencies. You can also usually get your rebuild kit from them as once they make all the measurements they'll know if you need new pistons and what size. Also what size bearings.
