Where should I start in getting my 1989 Honda VTR250 to run again?

It was running when it was stored 10 years ago. I want to get it running again. Battery is an obvious but where should I start? Do you think it will need any major/ expensive repairs? I've been told it should easily get running with a bit of work, what exactly does that mean?

It will not be feasible to go through everything on here that will be needed. The main problem may well be the engine internals which could have corroded so badly if they have not been turned over regularly with oil in there.
Rubber and plastic components will have deteriorated in the fuel and air system and need replacing.
There may be corrosion in the fuel tank and fuel residue throughout the fuel system blocking it.
The tyres will be dangerous at best.
It is likely to need a full strip and rebuild depending on how well it was prepared for storage and treated and stored for those 10 years. Chances are that it will not be worth the time, cost and effort.

Drain the tank, pull the fuel lines off (might want to remove the tank) and check for rust inside the tank with a flashlight and by shaking upside down. Time to replace all of the fuel lines, and probably rebuild the carburetor and fuel petcock and finger strainers… At the very least least disassemble and clean thoroughly. The electrics should still be ok, but it doesn't hurt to wiggle connections and see if they are corroded. Put it in the highest gear, raise the rear wheel, remove the spark plug, squirt some oil and/or WD-40 in the spark plug hole and and pull the engine through to make sure it isn't seized. Definitely R&R the oil filter and oil. I wouldn't assume it's corroded internally unless it's corroded internally. When finished give it a tuneup per the Haynes or Clymer manuals. I agree that it's time for new tires… But get it running first.

  • Why isn't my 1989 honda vtr 250 getting a spark? I just bought a 1989 honda vtr 250 it has a strong crank like it wants to start but won't start. The battery was bad so I had to use a bigger battery from my dad's motorcycle and it would crank stron but still nothing. We took out the spark plug and put it in the wire and held it near frame and no spark at all while cranking, could it be a bad ignition coil, rectifier, or stator or what?
  • Should I buy this bike? 1989 Honda Hawk? Just got my endorsement, looking for a first bike. I stopped by a dealership (for fun really, I've been looking on Craigslist mostly). There's a 1989 Honda Hawk, nearly spotless with a few chips here and there. Dealership is asking $1,600 and I noticed they ve come down from $2000 since last month. I was looking to stay under $1500 and buy an injected bike but I really like this one. Thoughts? Also, is there a possibility of getting the price to $1400? Could I haggle successfully.
  • 50CC scooter randomly died on me and refuses to start again? I have a 1997 Honda Giorno and just yesterday it was running perfectly fine when it just randomly died, it didn't make any noises while still running, it just stopped. I have since topped up the oil and tried starting it numerous times (on the kick start) to no avail. I was told that it would be a spark plug problem but I won't have the tools to change it for another couple of days. Could anyone point me to other possible problems?
  • Car ran fine then wouldn't start, got a jump, now everything is fine again. What happened? '03 Honda Civic. Last 30 mins of work I sat in my car with the A/C on full blast and radio on, like I do everyday (and of course the car is running). I stopped at Subway after work. The car was parked for 10 mins. After the car would not start but the radio and dash board lights would come on, but it would not crank. Got a jump from AAA. Afterwards Auto Zone tested the battery and alternator, both passed. I has been a week now and no problems. What the heck could have happened?
