Most reliable used cars under $3,000?

I'm looking to get my first car soon. I'm not looking for down payments, just any reliable car, with good gas millage that will sell under $3000. (probably from craigslist)

PS I'm not looking for any SUV, or truck (Low gas millage)

Added (1). Don't forget the model and manufacture date

Added (2). Okay, thanks to Christopher's answer, I decided on a Honda accord years 1998-2002

First, I do not know why everyone is So in love with craigslist, its just a classifieds, its not like the people on it are more honest than anywhere else. Anyway, the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla and Honda Accord and Toyota Camry with 4 cylinders are your best bet. The cars age well and are reliable and the least likely to hit you with repair bills. At the price point you are looking at, low mileage is king of all. How new the car is ($3000 cars are all going to be 10 years old or older, unless they have been wrecked) is not nearly as important as how many miles it has. A 2000 model with 80,0000 on the clock is a far better buy than a 2007 with 200000 on it.

The biggest issue with FWD cars that age is the front suspensions need a lot of work. Often a small RWD truck with a four cylinder can make up the gas cost difference when you consider maintenance.

Find your car that is clean and drives good with lowest mileage possible. Then take it and pay a mechanic to check it out like you can't. On a lift.

An old toyota would be nice

I'd prefer a manual

  • What is the most reliable used car one can get? Your 3 choices? I'm shopping for an inexpensive vehicle that I can use to run around for errands and groceries in an semi urban area. Something economical on gas and good and reliable. I was thinking Honda Civil? What is your thought on that?
  • What are the top 5 or so used cars/trucks under $3000 in a CA market? Another words, what are the easiest or most sought after i.e. Camry and Honda are probably two of them, can you name others? Would appreciate if your responses is backed up with experience, i.e. Someone in the business, salesman etc. Or actual knowledge first hand. Nobody is reading the question and answering it…
  • Would you purchase a 2004 Honda pilot for $6,000.000 that has 216,000 miles on it? I'm just browsing online looking at cars for sale and a lot of them have 200k or more miles on them and they want $4,000 or more. Why do people sale their cars for such a high price with a lot of miles on them? Its not just Hondas its all types of cars private and dealers as well
  • Most reliable car for $1,000? I've been looking at Toyota and Honda from 1995-2004 because they get great gas mileage, but in terms of reliability who makes the best 10 year old cars?
