Do I have to get a synthetic oil change?
I drive a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid and for my past two oil changes, I've gotten synthetic. I've read online that Honda actually says to use conventional, but does that also apply to the hybrid? Can I use a synthetic blend or just switch completely to conventional?
No. The engine-oil must to be an american petroleum institute (api) certified 0w-20 oil, if there's no api certified 0w-20 available, then an api certified 5w-20 oil, as specified in the honda owners manual of the 2008 honda civic hybrid in page 215
but the owners manual doesn't say it must be or mustnt be a synthetic 0w-20 oil, the manual says on page 216 the oil "may" be an api certified synthetic oil, that means synthetic oil is not recommended and neither advised against, accordingly all sorts of api certified 0w-20 oils may be used for the engine of the 2008 honda civic hybrid. An oil is identifiable as api certified by the api seal on the container of the 0w-20 oil.
Look at the owners manual. These cars use 0W-20 oil. Most of the oils of this viscosity are synthetic oils. Do not get confused by all this. Select a leading brand, look at the bottle, look for something that says 0W-20 and you are good to go. If you are still confused, go to a Honda dealer and buy your oil there.
- Why do people get mad over the fact that their cars require full synthetic oil? I work as a mechanic and found some people do not like the fact 2010 and up toyotas and Hondas and almost all 2014 cars and European cars require full synthetic oil. A majority of the anger comes towards toyotas and Hondas. Despite me explaining the increased intervals, they still get angered at the fact. Is it just me or does less time doing oil changes that save you more money in the long run end up coming out cheaper despite the increased price and why would they be angry saving money?

Took the car to my mechanic to have brakes checked, and he thought the oil looked dirty so he drained it and put in regular oil. Now I'm concerned about my engine. Advice please?
