Is a Honda Civic SI Sedan a good first car?

I really love the car and it's not a bad price, compared to many other cars my siblings have looked at. I won't be getting the car right away. I'm going to be driving my sister's old car, which is stick shift. So, I'll learn how to manage a stick shift. I'm going to get my permit soon and just want something for Senior year. I have always wanted a horse, but I've talked to my parents. They would pay for the car, while I have to budget the right way for a horse. Which means, I'm going to have to make sacrifices.
Only things I'm concerned about is:
- SI Sedans have high insurance costs. Is this true? I'm going to talk to my dad and a car dealer, once I'm ready for my own car.
- Too fast? People are saying it's too fast and others are saying it's perfect for a new driver.

Tips?

It's manual transmission, and I'm figuring out what type of gas it needs. It's a 2014 Honda Civic SI Sedan, but I wouldn't be getting it until 2016. I'm new into cars, and really just want to know every detail. I'll be doing a lot of research, but I need tips. Please don't be rude!

Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla Altis?

Which should I choose?

Honda Civic: 1,798 CC
141 PS
5 M/T

OR

Toyota Corolla Altis: 1,598 CC
122 PS
6 M/T

(I like Honda Civic because it has a 1.8 L displacement but I also like the 6 speed manual transmission of Toyota Corolla Altis because we don't have 6 speed manual transmission Honda Civic here in the Philippines)

So which should I choose?
