How many years will a new car last before it breaks down often?

If you buy a brand new car and keep up with maintenance, how many years can you expect to get before it begins breaking down often, requiring frequent and/or expensive repairs? 5, 10, 15, 20?

I know this can vary depending on the model, but let's assume a Honda or equivalent Japanese car.

Should I buy Hyundai Xcent or Honda Amaze?

I'm planning to buy a car recently. This is my first car. I'm planning to buy petrol middle variant. My budget is around 7L on road in Kerala.

One of my friend owns Amaze and he is satisfied with its engine and riding comfort. But I hear that Xcent is feature rich than Amaze. So, is it worth buying Xcent ignoring amaze? I'll be driving average 800km/month and mostly on weekend and include highway driving as well as city drive.

Please help me choosing the best car from your experience. I'm planning o keep it for at least 5-7 years.

Added (1). Today I made o TD on both. I'm satisfied with the power, steering and all. Riding comfort is good for both. Xcent is feature rich car. Even top variant of Amaze doesn't have the features of mid segment Xcent. I'm very much attracted with the features.
Amaze looks big though there's no much difference in sizes of both. And the brand name "HONDA" is driving my mind to Amaze.

I'm a college student should I get a used 2007/2008 acura tl?

I'm a college student looking to buy a car anytime soon, and I have been deeply in love with the 2007 and 2008 Acura TL s. I also found out that Acura TL s are phenomenal awesome cars especially the 2004-2008. I don't make alot of money but i heard that they are advanced hondas which are highly reliable. Plus i just checked and you can get the used ones that are in great condition with like 70k miles on it for a steal right now.
So my questions are;

As a college student should I buy an acura? I heard the repair will be a tad bit more than a honda because there share most parts.

it requires premium gas but gets good gas mileage so is it advisable to buy a car that uses premium gas in college? Bear in mind I'm on the tight side with income but i plan to use the car way way after college probably until it dies never to wake up again.

Anyone that has an acura, will you recommend it to someone you know?

some of my friends have been telling me "its a near luxury car, its a luxury car blah blah blah" and you can afford maintenance and repairs is this true? Should this put me off the car I love? Although i plan to have it for a very long time, its not just my college car, it will be my first and permanent car. So please let me know what you think. I will greatly appreciate if an acura owner will chip in.

Thanks!

P.S I'm paying all on my own no parents contribution, no one is helping me so…

Added (1). I will also consider a TSX, which one is more of a luxury car the TL or the TSX cause I'm looking to go for the least luxury so that I can get it for a cheaper price and also have cheaper maintenance cost.

Should I let my son do this?

He wants to buy a Honda S2000 with 73,000 miles for $12,500 with his own money. I'm ok with it but I advise him not to. He wants to buy it now knowing how hard it is to come across a 2001 With that low of miles in great condition witch i believe is true. This will be his first car and he is a responsible driver but should I let him buy it? Part of me says yes and the other half no.

2003 pontiac grand am gt engine noise?

I bought the car new in 2003 and have taken great care of it. I have had all scheduled maintenance done and replaced those things that have broken down over time due to "wear and tear." I now have 165,000 miles on it…

Last week, I was idling in traffic behind a Honda and heard a loud, arrhythmic banging/gurgling sound. I thought, "Man that Honda's in terrible shape;" it turned left and I realized the sound was my car. The noise has not stopped. I can hear the noise while sitting still but not while driving/accelerating. I would say it started that day but I didn't hit anything or hear anything break…

I checked my coolant level and added a little bit just to be safe. I replaced the radiator cap since I read that the gurgling noise might be air getting into the coolant system, and because the noise seems to be coming from that general area of the engine. I had the oil changed on schedule about a month ago and the level is currently where it should be. The air filter's a little dirty but there's nothing loose in there. None of the hoses or belts appear to be worn. Since I've had the car for 11 years, the catalytic converter, fuel pump, and intake manifold gasket have all been replaced.

What is making this noise, and how much am I looking at?
